Rusto Or Resto? Well-Loved 1972 Camaro

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

There are many good things and many bad things about this red 1972 Chevrolet Camaro. For one thing, its “sell me” red which is nice. Its also wearing a split-bumper front clip, which is also nice. It looks to have a set of aftermarket alloy wheels on it, and they appear to be in good condition with minimal pitting and damage. Unfortunately, that completes the list of positive highlights for this particular car! It seems that it is an Illinois vehicle, which probably accounts for the rust. Find it here on eBay with an optimistic Buy It Now price of$7,500.

From the photos its hard to tell if the seats have been reupholstered, or if they are seat covers. The tight fit of the material suggests to me that this is a custom interior. The dash looks clean and from this angle, it seems crack-free which is always a plus. You’ll notice a Grant steering wheel, a well as what appears to be a column-mounted aftermarket tachometer, both items which complement this Camaro quite well. According to the ad, this car had been parked in a garage for 12 years, and the person from whom the seller acquired it had owner it since 1991. This would account for the custom interior, dated Grant wheel and alloys. I can’t tell exactly what items are in the passenger seat, but I would hazard a guess that many of the items not seen on the car (such as an air cleaner) are in that pile!

Here we have the air cleaner-less engine, which the seller states is a TBI 350 that has been stroked to 383 cubic inches, or so he was told by the previous owner. This Camaro is a factory air conditioning car (always a plus in my book!) and has a 10-bolt rear end. Hopefully the air conditioning components are somewhere in that pile inside the car! Of the pile, the seller states “The car also has a bunch of parts inside that I have not had a chance to go through, I think it is the original air  set up,” so hope is not lost. They don’t appear to be attached to the engine, and I know that most people remove all of that stuff to go fast, but I prefer to have it attached and working!

Admittedly, I have seen worse rust, and likely so have you. However, the seller states that this Camaro has “minor rust,” and while this may not be the worst frame rot I’ve ever seen, its far from minor. I believe his claim that the frame rails aren’t soft, but that much metal missing cannot be good for the structural integrity of the car! I would likely pass on this, as rust repair is one of my least favorite automotive activities. Are you up for it?

2nd Gen split bumper cars always look bad ass. Most guys here are all about originality, it has the wrong engine and isn’t a Z28. Big brakes big tires and big power is it.

Nyet ….. T000000 many negatives… rust, dead ” 383 ” , rust, auto, rust, nose job, and more Illinois rust.

Ruff, Ruff, ….nyet…. look West, young man, frame rust is more expensive than a decent West Coast car

There is no such thing as a “split bumper” Camaro. This car is equipped with the rally sport option. That includes the bumperettes, the round parking lights at the level of the headlights, and the Endura bumper around the grille. The bumperettes from a Rally Sport can be installed on a standard Camaro originally equipped with a one piece bumper, but one never came from the factory that way. That is just a hack job someone dreamed up.

I was about to post the same thing ! There was the Z22 Rally sport option, and the standard front. The standard front could also have the ” VF3″ deluxe front & rear bumpers for an extra $37 in 1971.

there are a boatload of standard cars out there with the incorrect bumpers.
enough of this split bumper nonsense.

Agreed, it was only called the Rally Sport option. Split bumper is a term dreamed up somewhere…..doesn’t actually exist except in resto-mod world. Mine was a ’72 RS/SS Camaro.

It was probably a well equipped car when new…. Rally Sport option, with AC and the custom interior ( you can tell by the interior door panels)

I don’t know squat about rust repair but I would run from any subframe type vehicle with gigantic gnarly holes like this one has. Most of the corrosion is typically hidden and there is enough showing for me to think it is a better donor than runner. Not a fan of 383 strokers more downsides than up.

I bought a 73 type lt from the orig. owner. It had the correct split bumper and parking light setup. neversaid rallysport any where.

That is because in 1973 the LT was the highest badge option. This meant if you bought an LT it did not matter what other options it had it would sport LT badges. Even my LT/Z28 when new only had LT badges.

For the millionth time, there is no such thing as a split bumper Camaro. The bumperettes were part of the RS option, and ONLY part of the RS option. If the car was not an RS, and has the bumperettes, then someone has hacked it up.

The bumperettes added to a non-RS car is the worst mod of all.
