Scouting Party: 3 International Scouts

This is a first come, first serve basis, to purchase these wonderful International Scouts. If you would like to buy all three trucks, you can do so for $11,000. If not, each truck is priced separately. The collection includes a 1963 Scout 80 for $2,000, a 1964 Scout 80 for $3,250, and a 1969 Scout 800 for $7,500, all with clean titles. They are located in Gurnee, Illinois. Thank you, Roger, for the tip. You can view more here on Craigslist.

The seller has listed each truck out individually. The “Red Warrior” is the 1963 Scout 80. It has a V4 engine with a 3-speed manual transmission and four wheel drive. New drivers side floors have been installed, but there is rust abound all over the truck. A Bluetooth stereo has been installed along with dual speakers and comes with a remote. It does run and drive and you can view a video walk around and a start up here.

The “Green Beast” is a 1969 Scout 800 with almost an identical description. It also has V4 with a 3-speed manual and 4 wheel drive. The seller has also installed an aftermarket Bluetooth stereo, speakers, and includes a remote for this truck as well. As far as rust goes, the seller notes that this truck has plenty of it as well, but there are no holes in the cab. I guess there might be holes in the red one? You can view a video of “Green Beast” here.

Lastly is “Desert Gem” a west coast, yellow, 1964 Scout 80. The seller says it comes from Montana, is extremely rare, and was garage kept. It has only surface rust and could be a daily driver to the right person. The engine and transmission is identical to the other two, a V4, 3-speed manual with four wheel drive. No Bluetooth stereo is listed on this truck. There are two separate videos for “Desert Gem.” A walk around and a startup video. This could be an incredible start to a family off road hobby!

So I’m sure many others will chime in here but the yellow scout is the only Scout 80. The others are 800s . Easiest clue there is the location of the wipers. Only the 80 had the wipers on top of the windshield.
The V4 moniker can be confusing. These engines are inline 4 cylinder engines. Like a slant 4. IH cleverly just cut a cylinder bank off of a V8. The 152 cu in is almost literally half of a V8 304. I’m certainly not the leading expert but I do own several of these. The claim of no rust is doubtful. Parts rusted off while new in the storage lots in Ft.wayne.

What makes one rarer than others

The yellow Scout 80 is the oldest no matter what the ad says. It has a folding windshield and sliding glass door windows. That’s all standard equipment for that year but it makes it a little more cool/ weird/ rare but hot, leaky and cumbersome.
The green one may be an 800a judging by the grill and headlamp trim. Just doll up trim differences. All three have the standard power train. The leaning tower of IH power. 86 horsepower. The 4 cylinder models make poor candidates for V8 transplants. The engine compartment was redesigned for the v8 models to be roomier wider and longer.

Oh yeah ,forgot to mention. The red one has the popular “west coast” side view mirrors installed. Possibly dealer installed. Way cool nonetheless.

    KeithK,
You might not be “the leading expert” but you’re an expert.
I was going to make some comment about rust but couldn’t beat yours :)

And definitely not V4s as KeithK notes! 152 was a gutless engine.

These Scouts just recently came into view in my radar, and I picked one up -but a 67. 4cylinder, and a 4 speed. Very clean, almost no rust. I am really looking forward to fixing this up and doing some gravel road roaming in the hills! Removable hard tops on these will add to the fun!

I have been wanting a international scout since I was able to drive. But I want 1 with a v8 with the 4 speed manual transmission. But international scouts are hard to find in central Illinois where I live.

“Easiest clue there is the location of the wipers. Only the 80 had the wipers on top of the windshield.”

Yes and no. The Scout 80 does have the upper wipers and the fold down windshield. But when IH went to the Scout 800 in 1965, there were still many extra top wiper windshields out there. IH simply made the first few with them and even offered it as an option for a short time. So there are a few Scout 800’s with the upper wipers out there. And many of an argument has taken place.

That being said, IF the grill is correct in the yellow Scout, then Yes, it is a Scout 80.
