The Chevelle got a restyling for ’66 that included some smoothed-out body lines, with the Super Sport version being the Chevrolet of choice for many performance enthusiasts. The SS went from just an option on the Malibu to the Chevelle Super Sport becoming an offering of its own, with a 396 under the hood as the standard engine. Many of these cars have exchanged hands numerous times at this point, but if an example that was owned by a single family until just last year stimulates your excitement, this one may be worth checking out. The Chevy is located in Shawsville, Virginia, and can be spotted here on Craigslist with an asking price of $29,500.
T.J., thanks once again for this and all your other great tips, please keep them coming! The seller mentions that the Super Sport was parked in the early eighties in an Ohio shed when the car had only 64,000 miles. It stayed with the original family since new until they sold it to the present owner just last year, who claims that most of the parts it left the factory with are still present on the car.
There’s some good news and bad news regarding the engine. On a positive note, that’s the original numbers-matching 396 still under the hood, which produced 325 horses right from your Chevrolet dealer. More good stuff is it even retains items like the factory plug wires, hoses, clamps, battery cables, and several other original parts. The bad news is it won’t turn over, but a bit more from the sunny side is it’s a factory 4-Speed car and the 12-Bolt positraction rear-end remains underneath.
Outside, the body is said to be unrestored, although the car did have one repaint in the late seventies. It actually looks pretty good as far as straightness goes, but the seller does mention that there’s some rust in the front fenders and the metal strip under the windshield. He also says the trunk pan and parts of the floor have some corrosion, but the sale also includes quite a bit of replacement metal that’s going to be needed.
Other than a tear in the driver’s seat, almost everything inside seems to be in fairly decent shape, with most of the interior still comprised of factory components. The seller does realize that the car needs a total restoration, but with the correct drivetrain still in place and the Super Sport being overall complete, this one seems like a pretty good candidate to bring back to life. What do you think?
I’m clueless as to how a vehicle in this condition has an asking price of almost $30k!!!!!!……this is more what $30k should look like…..I will sell it for that $$
I agree 100%.
Remember these are barn/shed finds. They are vehicles from a car dealership or a car lot for crying out loud. $10,000. if the car even runs.
Thanks for listening.
Ken
It’s not hard to figure out, they keep asking these prices because these wanna be muscle car owners keep paying the prices. When ya have the money to put out it’s easy, ya buy a beater and take it to a shop and pay someone else to restore it, god forbid they get grease on their hands. By the way Al that’s one nice Nova ya got there, wish I had an extra 30 , that would look good at my place. 👍
Beautiful
Wish I had few xtra pennies to bye
Oh my that’s crusty, would have been nice to rescue this steel a about 20 years earlier. Didn’t sit in any climate controlled garage. Said it before, I used to reside in NE Ohio. Spring and fall when that steel is cold and the warm humid air come together this is the result. Many experienced man hours going to be required to bring this one back. Got to luv those mag wheel covers!
Really nice car to get it running as a driver I like it.. . 30k nice …not imo.15- 20k I could see because it’s a 4 speed ss bb and #’s car with today’s crazy high prices.imo.
Better get a good look under this one. It’s running an Ohio tag. That means lots of rust underneath. Doesn’t even have power steering. It will drive like a tank. May be worth it for half the price but not one to buy sight-unseen.
Yup, and as a life long Ohioan I’ll tell you, cars just rust away whether stored inside or outside, the humidity is terrible on cars here.
Wonder how long that heater hose has been rotted off??
8 to 10 k tops would be a good buy
It’s a Chevelle SS396, Welcome to the world we live in, I went to a local car show last summer and a gentleman was selling a 1967 Chevelle SS 396, for $85K, it was a gorgeous car and appeared to need nothing but a new home. But all it takes is one buyer to step up. and cut a check, the hobby has unfortunately generated a tons of greed. The only thing that will slow it is a bad economy.
It’s not greed , its called what someone is willing to pay for a product no matter what it is….wouldn’t you try to get the most for your classic if you were selling one if someone is willing to pay a high price for it? The choice is theirs to buy it or walk away. There has been raging inflation for 2 years now and people might not be buying classics like they were but prices are still strong although cooled down a little bit the last 6-8 mos. There still are plenty of buyers with $ and they are buying.
A 67 Chevelle SS is much more sought after, thus more valuable, than a 66.
Almost $30,000 ? I bought my 67 Chevelle SS 4-speed 4:11 posi with bucket seats, but without a engine for $6500 back in 08. It was basically this car, but a 67. I really don’t understand why these prices have climbed so high in so few years……..
Pay close attention to the frame, but car looks descent. Ohio is not the ideal climate for setting in the shed. Love the color combo .
I would agree this is going to take a lot of work, but in this era of people trying to set their money on fire because they think it’s not going to be worth anything tomorrow, this will sell fast, probably above the ask.
I like it. A Super Sport without the mechanical gauges in dash, not even a tach, and single exhaust too. From an era when you could buy what you wanted, and how you wanted it.
I think it’s a lot of money up front and a lot more after purchase and end up with a heavy, crude, poor handling, slow by today’s standards car that’s forgettable.
