Shiny And Red: 1960 MGA 1600

left

This MGA is listed on craigslist and on the Performance Auto Gallery for $19,000 (Almost a bargain at half the price?). It was found in a barn in St. Michaels, Maryland and is now located near Washington, DC. This MG was owned and driven by an MG mechanic. It has has some updates, like front disk brakes and instruments. There is very little corrosion and it runs and drives well.

The pictures on Craigslist make it look great, but up close the chrome is pitted and the paint is checked and cracked.

The interior is serviceable. It looks like a nice place to be!

Things look tidy under the bonnet with no obvious signs of oil leaks or engine fires.

The pictures in the craigslist posting are a good example of selective photography. The closeup shots on the Performance Auto site tell the story a little better. Is there something about this MG that makes it worth so much? In eBay, sold listings, for example, there are MGAs which are described as at least as nice as this one and they sell for about half the price. I look forward to reading your comments.

It’s worth that much in DC because the politicians and lobbyist don’t know the value of a dollar.
I like the car, I’d repaint the valve cover and leave the rest alone. If only it was selling for the, outside Washington price.

Wow, at a little more than that price you could get into a Big Healey that needs as much work and you’d have better upside.

      Greetings All,

OKCPhil, That Memphis MGA is a coupe, not a roadster with a hardtop, which explains the price difference.

Ah sorry. Confused it with a hardtop convertible. Nice though for the price plus less skin cancer :-)

Overpriced by about $9000. The driver’s side door fit would scare me right away. I assume it does not have a top or we would see it. Just my personal opinion but the black painted wheels and white seats are not a strong selling point. Finally, this dealer couldn’t source a tail light lens before listing it? Really? All that said this as all otherMGAs will be fun to drive.

It always amazes me to see HANKOOK Optima tires on a carefully preserved British Roadster. It looks nice but, NO, too much. Its not a Porsche or even a big Healey (although the black wheels give it an XK-120 Jaguaresque look). I like that word — Jaguaresque.
