A New York shipyard probably isn’t the best place to store a car. Especially one prone to rust like this 1971 BMW 2800CS. The current owner purchased the car as a project but lost interest so they have listed it here on eBay. Don’t let the low price fool you though. There is lots of corrosion and it will be expensive to repair. The rusty 3.0 CS behind it is for sale too! Thanks goes out to Steve A. for sending this one in.
The 2800CS was created when BMW took a four-cylinder coupe body and dropped their inline-six into it. Considering that this is the same thing they did with the 3 Series, we think they have had a lot of success with this formula. Anyway, these were great driving machines, but do you think this one should still be thrown a life preserver and rescued?
My favorite BMW right after the original 2000CS coupe.
Same thin Karmann bodied sheet metal and a rusty (twisted) nightmare in the early eighties already in Europe, where and when sheet metal was already hard to find.
Beautiful design, but if you have to get/have one, get a good one. Even if it’s close to home, this is NOTHING MORE than a parts car……..and this coming from an enthusiast and E9 fanatic.
I take it back.
They can both be saved, but sure is a lot of work and trying to find the parts , good luck, and I hope who ever has a big wallet too.
I’d rather know more about the Scirocco.
I would trade you all three of my Sciroccos for half one of these !
I bet he is selling it as she was probably under water during hurricane Sandy. That would scare the hell out of me trying to get the ocean out of it.
Wayne, I think you hit the nail on the head. I also can’t see putting any money into this.
A very good point you bring up, Wayne.
Boy…….talk about being underwater. Rebuild this and your bank account will be swimming with the fishes and Mike Nelson.
My neighbor had one when they were new, he even bought it gray market, I think it was called a 2800 CS, it was supposed to be faster then the car available here also it had nicer bumpers, lights, I think no side markers, or nicer smaller ones,& a stick, anyway I drooled every time I looked at it.
Mistake, I think it was called a 3.0 cs.
The cars are just up the coast from Breezy Point/Rockaway on Long Island.
What Wayne & Rancho said.
~ it’s a crying shame, don’t let this happen to cars you love.
I WOULDN’T PUT THE MONEY I FOUND IN THE SEATS INT FIXING IT UP. .I DO BELIEVE IT IS BETTER TO FIX THAN CRUSH SO I HOPE SOMEBODY SAVES THEM OR AT LEAST PARTS THEM OUT……
I bought a freshwater flooded Jag years ago and loved it…everything had been replaced, and I mean everything at exorbitant cost to the owner. I’m sorry for the owner of this car and the sad jalopy behind it but guaranteed seawater flooded and badly rusted BMW’s do not command $2,700. Or even $27 as most of the parts are shot as well. I still love them both and hope they are saved but would not recommend buying either of them at any price. The trailer looks good though!
