Short Bed Survivor: 1984 Chevrolet 4WD Pickup

Square body pickups are all the range and prices are soaring. It is hard to find a good 4WD example in these trucks that is not rusty or too pricey. A 1987 GMC 4×4 Short Bed recently sold in the mid $20s. It was in nice condition but had 90,000 miles. This example is a 1984 Chevrolet Scottsdale pickup that is four-wheel drive, short bed, and looks to be a survivor. The truck is located in Fort Harrison, Montana and it is being auctioned here on eBay with three days remaining in the auction. The truck is currently bid to $8,299 after 41 bids.

The interior looks original and while the truck is equipped with power steering, AM/FM Stereo, and power brakes, the amenities on the inside are spartan. The truck has roll-up windows, manual locks, no air conditioning, no tilt, and a 4-speed manual transmission. The dash is cracked and the carpet is worn through. The seat is covered in a Walmart bench seat covering that matches the brown interior nicely. The buyer paid for the Scottsdale package when new which was the mid-level option group below the Silverado. The door panels are faded and the armrests are cracked.

The motor appears to be the original 305 cubic inch V8 engine that is said to start up and run fine. There is a puff of smoke on start-up from leaky valve guides.  The 4WD works freely and the truck is equipped with a 3.08 rear gear ratio. The seller states that everything works on the truck including the wipers, lights, heater, and gauges. I had a 1985 GMC truck similar to this with the 305 cubic inch motor and, while not powerful, it was reliable and fun to drive.

The Indian Bronze brown paint is showing signs of weathering especially on the front fender. The truck has had two owners since new when it was sold at T-W Chevrolet in Butte, Montana. The truck appears to be free of rot and any bad rust. The truck comes with a Glasstite topper which is removable. All in all this truck looks to be a true survivor and one that needs a little TLC but could be driven home today.

This seller must be buying (& reselling) every old
American truck in that part of the country.

Decent truck, good feedback, no reserve. I don’t recall seeing a lot of these short box 4x4s around back in the day – seems everyone wanted the 8′ box for hauling firewood, camping gear, work tools, etc. I like these trucks, easy to work on and reliable. Should have bought one 5 years ago when they were relatively cheap!

Takes me back to my first vehicle. It was an ’85 GMC shortbox equipped just like this one minus color. Four speed, bench seat, dual fuel tanks, short box. The previous owner lifted it and had it sitting on 35’s. It had a nice stance to it. They also took out the 305 in favor of a warmed up 350, and replaced the 3.08’s with 3.73’s. Was a great truck that i miss having. I drove it through my high school years. It was ready for another restoration and was sitting in my parents driveway when one weekend I came back from tech school to find it stripped of its good parts and ready for the scrap hauler. My dad decided that he wasn’t going to give me the opportunity to restore it after school was done as my brother got to do with his. Was one of the worst days of my youth. I say it needed restoration but it was by no means an eyesore or in the way. It makes this one tempting to get to relive some of that….
