Simple Project? 1979 Pontiac Trans Am 6.6

This shiny black 1979 Pontiac Trans Am looks like it should just start right up and drive home. Unfortunately, the seller says that it won’t move on its own power. Apparently, the owner had the carburetor rebuilt but cannot find anyone to install it. If that is all that is wrong with it, you might be able to get a good deal on this one. It is listed here on eBay with 4 days remaining in the auction. Currently, it is bid to $7,500 and the Buy It Now Price is $11,000. It is located in Powhattan, Virginia.

The interior has been modified with recovered seats and an early GTO rally steering wheel. The options on this car include an automatic transmission, air conditioning and power windows. The hood scoop is missing in the pictures but the seller states that he has the shaker scoop and other parts to get the car back in running condition.

The seller believes that this Trans Am has its original engine. Pontiac offered the Pontiac 301 cubic inch V8, Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 and Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 engines in 1979 for the Trans Am. This Trans Am is equipped with the base engine for 1979 which was the K code L80 403 cubic inch V8 engine. It was rated at 185 horsepower and only available with an automatic transmission. This engine was mated with a highway gear ratios so it was a nice cruiser. If a seller opted for the Pontiac 301 cubic inch V8 engine which was only rated at 155 horsepower, they received a $50 credit. If you wanted the most powerful engine, you could get the W72 400 cubic inch V8 engine rated at 220 horsepower.

The Trans Am appears to have the base suspension with the standard 15×7 inch Rally II wheels. If the buyer wanted, they could option the WS6 handling package which came with wider 15×8 snowflake wheels, larger sway bars, and tuned shocks. If you are looking for a good entry point on a base Trans Am, this might be worth a second look.

The steering wheel is NOT a GTO wheel…it’s an aftermarket unit sold years ago…value is in the originality and this vehicle seems lacking, since it’s had its seat covers replaced, steering wheel replaced, and looks like maybe a respray job…nice looking car bit I’d be a little cautious because of the carb issue…whoever took it off should be able to put it back.

That steering wheel is from Grant, and is still available to this day. I have a hard time believing the carb just needs to be reinstalled… there must be more to this story.

Not buying the carb install story. If you took it off, it goes on the same way only in reverse. My guess would be the nylon teeth gave up on the timing gear. Ask me how I know.

    Who took the carburetor off?!
I’d rather this car was missing a front nose & even that style hood bird.
Formula steering wheels are not hard to find.

Outside of everything mentioned above, seemingly a nice car.

“Sorry, the carbs off. You won’t be able to hear that rod knock.” Cash or check, please!

Gotta love those big open holes on the intake manifold. Great for catches spare bolts, nuts,or screws.

I suspect that this was a Formula Firebird originally and someone has hack jobed it into a crappy Trans Am to collect on the cash of someone not doing the due diligence. It looks like at best a four grand car to me.
