Single Family Project: 1975 Chevrolet Nova

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Chevy II/Nova was one of Chevrolet’s best-selling nameplates. From 1962 to 1979, some 4.7 million copies of the rear-wheel-drive compact rolled off GM assembly lines. And that doesn’t include the clones that Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile fielded in the ‘70s. The seller has a one-family Nova 2-door sedan from 1975 that’s rough around the edges but will still get the job done. Located in Tacoma, Washington, this beater of sorts is available here on craigslist for $12,999. Kudos for this tip from “Curvette” from 50 years ago!

Chevrolet introduced the fourth and final generation of the Nova in 1975. It would be replaced by the front-wheel-drive Citation in 1980 (a lesser car IMO I owned very, very briefly). The updated car still looked like a Nova, though all the sheet metal was new. And the engineering was still old school with a 250 cubic inch inline-6 as standard (and half of the ’75 Novas were so equipped). This was the era of sticker shock at the gas pump, so a lot of new car buyers downsized to offerings like the Chevy Nova.

Somehow, this ’75 Nova has been in the same circle since it was new. Depending on where you read in the seller’s listing, the car has either 50,000 or 150,000 miles (given its condition, we’re betting on the latter). We’re told the six-banger displaces 292 CI, which is either a misprint or they found a truck engine somewhere. A Turbo-Hydramatic tranny is along for the ride. The old girl still runs, so would you restore it or go for something crazy under the hood?

While the green paint has given up (it’s a redo with a color change), we’re told there is no rust thanks to its Northwestern roots. A rework of the interior has started in terms of the door panels, headliner, carpeting, and aftermarket stereo. The wheels are from Torque Thrust and imply more muscle than the Chevy has.

Really rough for the asking price, it’s hard to see it as being worth $12,999 even if you believe the mileage. Mismatched interior, faded and flaking color changed paint where prep work didn’t include and jambs. There are better deals available to anyone willing to out in some effort, especially this time of year.

I think the seller pushed the 9 button once too many times!

$1299 is about right for that car.

Had a 1975 4 door and a 1976 4 door back in the day both 250 engines 3 speed auto with A/C. There where good everyday transportation. This one is missing A/C parts.
