Sitting For A Decade: 1977 Pontiac Trans Am SE

This 1977 Pontiac Trans Am SE is going to require a full restoration, but thankfully it does appear to be complete (or close to it). You will find it listed for sale here on eBay. Located in Rogers, Arkansas, it comes with a clear title. The seller has set an opening bid of $2,500 for this Trans Am.

The seller had planned on this Trans Am being his second restoration project, having already completed one car. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have the time to complete this one, so has decided to part with it. There are some rust issues with this car as can be seen from this shot. However, it is hard to tell just how extensive these are. The seller has included some additional parts in the trunk that go with the car. These parts include a couple of rear quarter panels. I also wish that there were some shots of the underside of the car as they would tell us so much more. The seller acknowledges that fact that the car spent some time in storage in a shed with a dirt floor, so there may be some issues underneath the car.

The interior is a bit of a surprise packet. The car doesn’t have a headliner, the dash pad and some parts of the plastic trim appear to be discolored and the upholstery on the door trims looks a bit suspect, but the rest of the interior looks like it may well respond to a good old-fashioned clean. The only item that appears to be missing from the dash is the factory radio.

The news under the hood is not all good. By the owner’s estimation, the engine has not been fired up in over a decade. It used to turn freely, but he recently fitted a new battery and attempted to crank it, but there was no joy. He has undertaken to obtain a breaker bar and try to wind the car by hand and will post an update on the eBay ad. The engine also isn’t the original engine, but it backed by an automatic transmission. The car also has power steering, power brakes, and air conditioning.

This Pontiac Trans Am is going to require a full ground-up restoration. The level of rust is an unknown quantity, as is the condition of the engine. If the rust isn’t too extensive and the engine can be revived then it could be a viable project for an enthusiast to take on. If it is restored to its original specification it will never command big dollars, but it could potentially make a good base for someone to build a Trans Am to exactly the specifications that they want.

I keep looking at that steering wheel… is that mold? Yeech. Wonder if the spats are in the trunk… bought a black & black ’78 when I was… um… let’s see… 19 & on active in the Navy down in the Keys. Fun to drive but a real pain in the butt to keep clean down there.

Before you bid, you better inspect or pay to have inspected, I was looking at cars like this until my brother in law convinced me to buy a rust free, original panel, SE, numbers matching, car in excellent condition. I’m glad I listened, that was 7 years ago, it has doubled in value. The nicest original car when maintained remains the nicest original car. Spend the money upfront unless you can do all the work, restoration cost and complications can be overwhelming, buying a good one means you have it the moment you lay down the money and minus the headaches, having cars restored can become an expensive nightmare.
