Sitting Since ’03: 1960 Chevrolet Impala

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1960 Impala is a bit of a “Jekyll and Hyde” case, and it will need a full restoration. The car appears to be complete, and while it may need some work, it is definitely not beyond help. You will find it listed for sale here on eBay. The Impala is located in Chatham, New York, and is being offered for sale with a NYS Transferable Registration. Bidding on the Impala opened at $100, but at the time of writing this has risen to $5,600.

After looking at how clean the driver’s side of the Impala looked, the passenger side is a rude shock. I’m not quite sure what has happened to the car, but my best guess is that one side of the car has spent some considerable time exposed to the elements. This isn’t the end of the rust issues, but it does seem to be the worst of them. There is some rust in the floors, and some of these will need to be replaced. However, some of the rust in the floors and in the trunk may be able to be repaired without resorting to wholesale replacement. It does appear that the frame of the Impala is solid.

The interior of the car looks complete, and the dash itself looks like it is in good condition. The seats and headliner are pretty sad, but new covers on the seats and a new headliner will make the world of difference to the car. The door trims may require reupholstering, but the rest of the interior trim looks like it may be okay with a clean.

Under the hood of the Impala is the original 283ci V8, and this is backed by an automatic transmission. The car has been sitting since 2003, and the seller doesn’t give us a lot of indication regarding the condition of the engine or transmission. The engine looks clean, but it doesn’t look like there has been any recent work to bring it back to life. At present, if it runs, it will need to run off an external fuel source. There is a shot of the gas tank in the photo collection, and I wouldn’t recommend putting gas in it unless you fancy standing in a pool of flammable liquid because it’s pretty far gone.

There is no doubt that this Impala is going to need a complete restoration, and while the shots of the passenger side of the car look pretty horrible, the car itself seems to be quite a solid proposition. Another bonus is the fact that the car looks to be virtually complete, and if the seller is right, then it’s also a numbers matching car. I think that there is a lot of potential in this car. I don’t think that I’m alone in that, as 13 people have already bid on the car.

They must have parked it with the right side in a pond! Very restorable. I don’t think there are many repair panels available for these. If they need to be fabricated with all those sweeping curves, it could get expensive. I had a 59 as my first car. Loved the styling, but I can tell you from experience, they get a little loose in the rear above 70 mph, especially on a wet road.

Back in 2006 I had a ’59 Chev 4 door and while passing a line of 4 cars on a South African national highway, I had a blow out on the right rear tyre at over 80 mph. Talk about getting a little loose! I managed to control it eventually and brought it to a stop by the side of the road and as the 4 cars passed me they all gave a hoot and a thumbs up. Great times.

The ’59 and ’60 were notorious for lifting the back end due to the tail fin design. That’s why Chevy deleted them in ’61. I still like ’em.

It;s really interesting that the 60 chevy.s racing in Nascar didnt have a problem lifting, That.s somebodies old wives tale

Isn’t it posssbke being a northern car driven in ice and snow with the right rear tire spinning like crazy broadcasting the elements and salt
under the rear right wells and hitting the lower rockers causing cancer .

The car can be saved with a good welder 👨‍🏭 and aftermarket parts for all including floor pans .

    This is a beautiful classic!

My heart sank when you jolted me with that passenger side rust pic.

Kinda odd to see a green body with red interior.

Did you look at the photos in the eBay listing? I’m not sure if the car was originally red and they painted the exterior green or they tried to change the interior to red. I think it was originally red looking at the photo where the carpet is lifted revelling the floor. Either way an odd combination of color choices.

I have a 60 Biscayne, that took me nearly 5 years to finish, but it is a pretty ride. Mine had been sitting in a barn on the back pasture of a farm near Fredricktown, Missouri when I found her back in 1998, she was one of the first cars I restored after I had built a shop at my home, I had been using my Dad’s original shop, but that is a different story.
This car can be restored, but it is going to be a quest to do. Whoever buys it, good luck!!

Big Mike, that looks like an Impala to me. Never saw a hard top Biscayne before.

reminds me of the Earl Schieb marketing tool where they would drive a car around with one side redone by good ol’ Earl and the other a rusty mess.

I don’t remember Earl Shieb doing that but I do remember Cal Worthington doing that.

The salesmen were told if they sold the advertised car they were fired.

      The scam worked great.

What my Lucia had when we were 15 and our get around car as long as I could keep it up. Sadly my dad didn’t approve and she went down the road. Still could be brought back and a buy if it stays under 6 grand.
