Sledgehammer: 284 Mile 1996 Impala SS

If you missed out on purchasing a new 1994-1996 Chevrolet Impala SS, you have another chance! This 284-mile absolutely mint survivor is for sale here on eBay, where bidding is up over $17,000 and the buy it now is set at $35,000. Considering the original window sticker was $25,640 and that equates to $40,253.02 in today’s dollars after inflation, I think it’s a pretty good buy! The SS is located in Rockwall, Texas.

Although it’s difficult to tell from these pictures, the car is actually in the optional Dark Cherry Metallic which to me is one of the prettiest colors ever to leave a GM plant. The Impala SS was essentially a 9C1 police car equipped Caprice with some visual modifications and a somewhat detuned Corvette engine. This car has obviously been kept this way from new, with the only change from stock being a set of tires for safety purposes.

The temporary tag from 1996 is still in place on the rear of the car!

Naturally, the original purchaser has all the records, brochures and the like saved carefully. You can see the “sledgehammer” reference there on the brochure cover–very appropriate, especially for the day!

Needless to say, the interior is mint as well, featuring the original plastic on the seats. The carpet paper is a nice touch!

The SS featured a 260 horsepower version of the LT1 engine with 330 lbs-ft of torque. Not a monster by today’s standards, but certainly enough to move this beast! Did you miss out on an SS? Does this seem like a bargain to you? Or would you rather have a low-mileage 2017 Chevrolet SS for about $10-15k more? Discuss in the comments section!

I loved these things. Like the GNX a decade earlier, lots of people saved them so this isn’t that rare. Somebody buy it and drive it. Conserve it and maintain it, but drive it.

Nice looking car- and the nice thing about the 96 is it is the only year with the console shifter, and that was the last year of production for this generation of Impala, kind of the end of an era for RWD OHV V8 body-on-frame cars- the Crown Vic was still around but the sohc 4.6 V8 in those cars was profoundly underwhelming and of an era best forgotten. Peformance-wise the Impala would easily get spanked by pretty much any current V6, but that is not the point- I still remember the ad for these cars when they first came out with the line “Lord Vader, your car is ready”!

It ended at $17,300, about 1/2 the reserve price, despite this blog’s glowing write-up. The market’s definitely slowing down i.e. people are coming to their senses. Listing the car’s original sticker price adjusted for today is pretty hilarious. I’ve got 3 megabytes of memory that sold for $500 in 1987, adjusted for inflation that’s (….), I’m only asking several thousand dollars, after buying it for a couple of dollars from some little old lady somewhere who never watches TV auction shows or knows anything about the Internet. These overpriced old cars are future beanie babies.

Computer memory is functional. Memories of one’s past, if good enough, are priceless. That’s what someone would be buying…

$17,300 seems like a bargain for what he/she/it is getting.

Makes me wonder how many ’90 ZR1 Corvettes are under wraps with virtually no miles…$17300 seems fair to me.

It didn’t sell for $17K or a bunch of people would have jumped on that. The guy wants $35K and relisted it with a BIN price for that amount.

I have to agree with you Jamie that Dark Cherry Metallic is a magic colour. I actually quite like this one, but being an Australian I would definitely be leaning very heavily towards the Chev SS. The SS is an Australian developed and produced car, and I believe that it is set to increase in value in coming years due to the fact the GM (Holden) ceased all vehicle production in Australia in October last year. The SS is the last of a breed. It also happens to be a really nice thing to drive….and this is coming from a blue-blooded Ford man.

my work friend bought a 96 and he could lay rubber for at least 300′ in the parking lot,so I’m not real certain about the v6 comment. btw i own a 2014 SS and wouldn’t trade it for anything except the Challenger T/A

I agree with you Tim–only thing being that I want to be the one doing the
driving and conserving of this wonderful car. Like you, I’ve always loved
these cars, and would love to own one now. However, my checkbook just
won’t allow it. I can only imagine how comfortable this car would be to
drive on a long road trip. My back would thank me all the way there and
    home again.

I’m very leery of low or no mileage cars because of the cost of getting the induction system either rebuilt or cleaned, inspecting the gas tank and so on.
Cars that sit for long periods have other issues but I try to stay away from paying premiums for low miles.

Definitely a time capsule, these cars were legendary at the time. Now any old sedan will keep up with it (and go faster) but there is a reason these were so popular. LORD VADER, YOUR CAR IS READY! It changed the way auto companies thought about the 4 door!

One of the best cars Chevy ever built, have a ’95 with 80,000 on the clock. You may not like their looks, but in CA it still clears the left lane on the freeway like no other car I’ve ever owned. Cross-country mileage is legendary among owners. It may not get off the dime as fast as some, but it’s very longlegged and easy on gas once up to speed. 28mpg from Boise to SF in under 9 hours – yes, a radar detector was involved.

“clears the left lane on the freeway”

LOL, peeps see your car in the rearview, and think 5-O is behind them, eh?

Nice. Powerful V-8 cars need not slurp the gas all of the time, as you and others have found. Great highway mile-melters.

I’d rather have the new SS though. A GM engineer friend was responsible for the USA tuning of that. Or I’ll take a G8 GT or GXP. Personal preference for the Holden-developed cars, I guess?

The new SS is nice, for a little car. Kind of a 4 door Camaro.
    This is a real car.

Or, you can look at the Craigslist post today in Boise for one in cherry with 54K asking 14G. (not my car, some flipper’s, I think)

In 1995 I ordered a crown vic black with sport package. Sadly, the car I should have ordered was the Imapla SS. Amazed at the value of these cars. Shame on ford for never offering a high output engine in the crown vic. Then again, the comparable Chevy is a better overall car.

Right Billy sorry. Forgot about that . A nice car. It took some eight years for ford to put about 80 more hp into that same engine. Where were they in 1995? How about a 5.4 option. Wonder if they figured the 95-96 ss owners were going to trade in for the marauder? Thanks

A lot of people considered the Marauder. Me included (diehard Impala owner who still has my 95 I bought new). However it had a few fatal flaws. First the rear wheel wells were tiny. Only fit 245 width tires. Customizing was expensive to stuff big rubber in there. Second like you said only 45 more HP (305 over 260) and by 2002 every Impala guy had made up that gap with bolt ons and a good tune so…we stuck with our Impalas. It didn’t sell well at all. What a shame.

I had a 1995 dark cherry SS in about 2003 briefly. It was a big boat to drive and I was not that impressed with the power. My other car was a Trans am with a 350 and 6 speed manual so I guess that spoiled me.

FOMOCO actually did offer a car similar to the SS the Mercury Maruader for a few years around 2003 I think, tried to revive the badass 4dr unfortunately it was only made for a year or 2 it was a cool looking car though if memory serves me it was 300 HP

Hello you SS fan. May I ask a question I have 1 2016 Chevy Impala Limited LTZ. On apps I’ve checked the LTZ Limited is the next package up from SS. So my question is other I know with mine a 3.6 V-6 what package difference is there then the V-6 cause it has the spoiler and the throaty sound the SS would?

The Chevy SS is it’s own car, it is not an Impala with an SS package.

The Chevy SS has a V8.
