This 1965 Plymouth Satellite is listed for sale here on Craigslist. It is located about 45 minutes south of Nashville, Tennessee and the title is missing. The seller has listed it for sale at $3,800.
The 1965 Satellite was the first year for this model, and it was available only as a 2-door hardtop or as a convertible. This hardtop version is said to be an Arizona car that has only moved to Tennessee a few years ago. Thankfully it has been kept in a shed since the move. The seller states that the car is solid, and a detailed examination of the photos tends to bare this claim out. The only thing that I question is the fact that the rear wheel-arch trim has pulled away in this photo. I can’t work out whether that’s due to wear and tear or whether there is rot in there.
The interior is going to need a lot of work, but thankfully the bones look solid. The dash is complete except for the factory radio, and appears to be in good condition. Considering that this is claimed to be an Arizona car the dash pad has held up remarkably well, as has the floor console. The former location would probably account for the air con unit hanging under the dash. The rest of the interior is showing the price of living in a hot and dry climate, with virtually everything else inside the car looking quite crispy.
Under the hood is the 318ci V8. This is backed by an automatic transmission, and “backed” is certainly the right word as the transmission currently resides in the trunk. The seller can tell us little about the engine or why the transmission was removed so we’re in the dark there. Hopefully it wont be anything too major, although I really hate the sight of that inlet manifold with nothing blocking the holes. Who knows what has managed to fall down there over the years.
If this Satellite is as solid as the seller claims then it may be a good buy. A search of the internet shows most cars selling north of $22,000. I did find one example for $9,000, but there was no information on its mechanical condition. If the body is solid then the running gear should not be that hard to bring back to life. The interior will need some work, but I can see a heap of potential in this Sleeping Satellite.
Well for not having a slant six, the first photo certainly reveals quite the slant to the whole car…heh…

Love this car, light car with ample room for monster motor under stock closed hood. Flush fix and drive if only it had a tittle . No title means $1500 at most. The license plate is the only reason I have interest. Seller needs to research previous owner and get title.

Great looking style for Plymouth in ’65. Certainly seems like a good foundation for a project being an Arizona car. Needs a 440 though!

My pal Denny Mac had a nice original ’40 Ford coupe back in ’66. We took it trolling one Saturday, meaning visiting car lots pretending to be interested in trading the old Ford for a newer car. One such test drive was a black on black ’65 Satellite with a 426 Wedge and a 4 speed. We didn’t just stumble across it, we knew it was on that lot. Word traveled fast. The sales guys were salivating so hard over the ’40 that they didn’t require a chaperone to a couple of 17 year olds. That Plymouth was a FUN CAR. :-) Terry J
