Smoking Deal: 1979 Pontiac Trans Am 10th Anniversary

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Pontiac marked the 10th anniversary of the Trans Am in 1979 with a special edition Trans Am, producing 7,500 cars featuring two-tone paint and a unique hood decal. This example is listed for sale here on Facebook Marketplace and located in Edmond, Oklahoma. The seller of this 10th Anniversary Trans Am is asking $18,500 and the listing has been up two weeks. The car is said to have 101,000 on the odometer so it must have rolled over once.

Of the total production of 7,500 Tenth Anniversary Edition Trans Ams, 1,817 vehicles were fitted with the W72 Pontiac 400 engine and a 4-speed manual transmission, while 5,683 units featured the L80 Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 paired with an automatic transmission. As can be seen in the picture above, this Trans Am is equipped with the L80 Oldsmobile 403 cubic inch V8 which was rated at 185 horsepower and 315 lb-ft of torque. The high-performance W72 Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8, combined with a Borg Warner T-10 4-speed manual transmission, came with 3.23 rear gears, WS6 suspension, and dual turbo mufflers, producing 220 horsepower and achieving a quarter-mile time in the high 14-second range. Although the 301 V8 was available for the 1979 Trans Am, it was not offered for the Tenth Anniversary Edition Trans Am.

The interior of these cars is unique  and featured special silver seats but the ad states that a prior owner recovered them in cloth. The factory interior for the 10th Anniversary Edition was adorned in silver leather upholstery and was optioned with T-Tops, WS6 suspension, power antenna, tilt steering, ETR radio, and various power accessories. They also had red backlighting in the dash gauges. The seller states that this car has some needs. While the interior looks nice, the door pins for both the driver and passenger door needs repair. The seller states that the parts to complete the project are included.

The oversized hood bird was special and limited only to the 10th Anniversary Edition. This car also has an aftermarket roll bar and the front end needs to be rebuilt. Additionally, all 10th Anniversary Edition Trans Ams were equipped with power antennas and a space-saver tire in the trunk. It is difficult to tell but the paint looks dull in most of the pictures. This car is priced at 1/2 of normal market prices for these special edition cars.

The pins that go through the door hinges and keep the doors aligned. Common wear item on GM 2 door hardtops due to the size and weight of the doors.

I like these 10th anniversary birds but for the price this is a very needy bird. $18k may seem reasonable but may be a little strong considering the funds you are going to put out to make this bird correct. Interior only you are going to drop a few $$$. Still I like it but not in the hunt for a classic at this time.

Classy car, Sure we all want the 400 4 speed with the 825 cfm carb, but the 403 auto wasn’t terrible. Pontiac looks sharper than the z28 again! To me This is the Best looking trans am, ok power for late 70s

I thought these all came with leather seats!
Was the hood bird & console standard equip on these anniversary ones?
If not, imagine an anniversary t/a with column shift automatic.
Best looking? I dont think so – i’ll take a ’70-’73 over this anyday.

All came with leather, last owner changed seats as in article. All was standard with Y89 package with bird wheels and interior that’s the Y89.

Seems like a pretty good deal for the shape of this Pontiac. These mid to late 1970’s cars are getting harder to find in good shape with a decent drivetrain that hasn’t been majorly modified!
