Pontiac paved the way for others to follow in the mid-size muscle car movement. It began as a performance option on the 1964 Tempest/LeMans and migrated to series status in 1966, the year it would sell nearly 100,000 copies. The ’66 GTO is a solid-looking car, too nice of a machine not to have an engine or transmission. If you have a Pontiac drivetrain looking for a home, this could be a nice place for it to come to roost. Located in Albuquerque, New Mexico, this nice roller is available here on eBay. Bidding has reached $7,200 with no reserve now to get in the way.
Three body styles were offered on the ’66 GTO: hardtop, convertible, and pillared coupe. The latter had the smallest production numbers of the three, with 10,363 units out of 96,946 total. That makes the seller’s car a bit harder to find more than 55 years later, especially one that isn’t a rusted-out hulk. According to the PHS report the seller secured for the car, it originally had a 335 hp, 389 cubic-inch V8 with a single 4-barrel carburetor and 4-speed manual transmission.
While the body and paint are certainly not perfect, this looks like a car you could drive before restoring once the empty engine compartment is resolved. Some of the chrome trim pieces may be missing, but we’re told the floors, frame, and sheet metal are all good, indicative of a car that’s spent much of its time indoors. While we don’t get treated to any interior photos, the seller says the upholstery, doors panels, and glass are all presentable.
Nice project car. Gonna need a lot of work inside too, though..

the seller says the upholstery, doors panels, and glass are all presentable….. yeah…right….he lost a lot of credibility right there.
Even though it is missing some key components, this looks like a better base for a restoration than that supposed ultra low mile blue one from a couple weeks ago.
Looks solid in the pictures, from what you can see, but what did the seller use to take those pictures…a poloroid swinger? I do have a friend that actually does have a 389/4 speed sitting in this shed….gonna call him now…
No wonder he did not have a sale on CL at $20K. This “66 Goat has been spared by the climate for sure though. Wish I had a relative close by that could store it for me and I would throw my hat in the ring.
