This extremely original-appearing 1975 Chevrolet C20 Camper Special pickup benefits from a rebuilt engine and transmission. It’s listed for sale here on eBay from a frequent and high-rated seller of classic vehicles and is located in Dallas, Texas. Bidding is up to $5,700 but the reserve figure has not yet been met. What do you think will bid the high bid for this cool truck?
These ‘Square Body’ (1973-87) Chevrolet and GMC pickups are now coveted as the ‘Action Line’ (1967-72) vintage trucks have increased so much in value. This long bed version with the Camper Special package was equipped for both show and go when new. The two-tone paint on these trucks is so iconic I don’t recall seeing many without it! While my family didn’t own one, many of my friends’ families did and I recall many trips made in the beds! Trivia time: believe it or not, when Chevy came out with the line of square-body trucks in 1973, they called it the “Rounded Line”! I’m guessing that was due to the wheel well shape, but really?
Speaking of beds, it’s nice to see one without a ton of rust! Other than the extreme paint fading on the hood, this truck is about how I would expect to have found a five-year-old one on a used car lot. The seller mentions clear-coating over the patina as an option to preserve the somewhat used look, something I’m not a fan of. Would you repaint the truck, drive it as-is, or take the seller’s advice?
One of the great things about these GM trucks is that you can open the glove compartment and see exactly how the truck left the factory. Apart from the 16.5 tires (those don’t look like split rims to me?) I think most of the rest of the equipment is still present, including the air conditioning. No word on if it works, but the belt is still in place. This VIN decoder clears up that this is a 3/4 ton model produced in Fremont, California. The seller lists the truck as both a C10 and C20 in the ad; it’s nice to know it is the more capable C20 model.
The underside looks terrific, and the shiny surfaces on the engine and transmission help to confirm that rebuilds took place, although who knows of what quality. The real big thing here is the lack of rust!
I’ve seen so many similar cheap seat covers on older trucks that I don’t even remember what the original upholstery looked like! Obviously, a carpet and re-upholstery kit would be nice, but honestly, I could live with this if I bought a decent set of floor mats to cover. The problem is that it’s rare to find colored rubber floor mats now (apart from tan, black and gray).
Now when I look under the hood, I’m wondering exactly how recently this 454 was rebuilt, because it certainly doesn’t look like it from this view. However, do you really care as long as it runs well? Would you put a truck camper in as originally intended? Let us know!
Always wondered who thought having to fill one tank on each side was a good idea?I stretched many a hose over the bed:-)
I never heard “Rounded Line” either. Additional research they, ’73-’80, were “rounded line”, due to the front fender design, and ’80-’87, with square headlights, were the real “squarebodies”. I believe 16.5’s were one piece, replacing the 2 piece 16’s. I’m sure there was a topper or something, the bed is too clean, and I hate to say it again and again, mine is in much better shape. One thing I notice with most of these, they never have the extra gauge package, with a big tach in place of the gas gauge, like mine. And I think that seat cover is factory, I have the same one. 454 about the biggest plus here.
the option list says tubeless tires…I dont think split rims would hold air without tubes… I could be wrong…….
BF has posted this before, on December 24th.
Pony blanket seat covers are not “cheap” seat covers. They are durable and comfortable, and I would not hesitate to leave one on even the nicest truck.
And no, they are not factory.
This looks clean and cared for Pee Paw truck. But he must have liked the big 454 too. Just got done repainting an 85 Custom Deluxe that I got from a friend of mine 3 yrs ago. That along with a rebuilt trans, new front end work and both saddle bag gas tanks. They weren’t fun to do, but now she’s a blast to drive to Ace Hardware and back. Good find she’ll probably sell from $8500-12,000 and worth every penny.
Had 76c20 dual tanks I agree
454 will pass everything except a gas station it has all the typical rust for those years at today’s market I will be shocked if it sells for less than $15k
We had almost the exact truck where I worked. I expected it to be pretty quick but felt about the same as our 350 Chevy or a 360 Ford pickup. It had some torque though for pulling trailers
