Stalled Restoration: 1969 Jaguar E-Type

Jaguar E-Types come out of hiding in staggering amounts. For all of the big-dollar sales and proverbial gasps when one is shown in dark lighting with dusty fenders, there sure seem to be a lot of them taking up space. This example is a 2+2 automatic car, and the seller notes a few issues that led to it being parked after the sidedraft carbs were rebuilt. It is now being sold as a rolling project that doesn’t run, and you’ll find it here on eBay with a $22,500 Buy-It-Now and the reserve unmet.

As you can see, bodywork was attempted, with the paint scrubbed down and all trim removed. The seller notes that the decorative elements, like chrome and headlight bowels, have all been retained. The Jaguar was parked following the discovery of a cracked header and leaking transmission, the latter likely due to overfilling. As a specimen, this is one of the less desirable ones out there with the 2+2 seating and automatic transmission – not to mention the torn-down condition.

However, as bidding is already active despite the reserve being unmet, there’s always a buyer it seems for these E-Types. This one also has factory air conditioning and reupholstered bucket seats, which could be driving some interest, and the seller points out that it will come with knock-off wheels, a spare manifold, and assorted other parts. Bumpers, door panels, and “…all interior parts” are also included. That doesn’t look like the original ignition, does it?

I’m always on the fence as to how much weight I put on a car that was *known* to be running but isn’t currently firing up. Of course, that’s how I’ve bought most of my vehicles, so I can’t say it would deter me. And while it’s not the answer to everything, a V8 conversion may make sense given the automatic transmission if there are issues with the 4.2L inline-six. With the reserve unmet, what do you think the seller’s rock-bottom price should be?

Yeah, a V8 conversion will really add value to it. Not.

When it’s done it’s worth what? Maybe $35k given the automatic and 2+2 configuration? It will take at least that to get the body back in shape never mind the mechanicals. Unless there is some emotional attachment ala original owner or relative this is a rolling parts car.

Headlight BOWELS? Holy James Bond Batman! Don’t you think that tail light bowels would work better? That way you won’t splatter stuff all over your tux, let alone lose control of your steering.

First thing anyone should look at regarding this Jag, is the condition of the monocoque. I’m guessing that it’s got some rust issues, possibly serious…

This is probably the least desirable E-Type one could own.

Well, with a day to go and only two serious bidders, it’s at 11K, half the ask.

I’m gonna take a WAG that the street value of this is somewhere around 11K.

And it’s not entirely clear whether the bids are for a project tor a parts car. It’s kinda too bad, but really, this is not a desirable variant of the E-type, and you can’t make a silk purse from a sow’s ear. I still hope it finds a home, but……..

I really don’t know what his bottom dollar would be, but what I do know is that these cars are very handsome when shining like new! You gotta love the body style!

I’m wondering if that is the original engine. There is that square boss with the block off plate visible in one picture. Is it an XJ6 engine? This could be massaged into a running beater but it’s value is exceeded by proper restoration costs. I’ve no doubt that in a few years the value of these less desirable models will start to increase. as the preferred models are no longer available. If it isn’t too rusty I would fix it up to drive it safely, but I currently can’t even afford this relic.

The 2 plus 2 is still a pretty car, not sure why they get beat up so bad by people. Kind of like comparing a 1963 Sting Ray to a 1964. I would love one. I agree with Wrong Way, built like Wonder Women. Ended: Aug 19, 2018 , 9:51PM
