After the successful introduction of the compact Falcon in 1960, Ford saw the need to further diversify by adding a mid-size model in 1962, using the tried-and-true Fairlane name. Chevrolet decided to follow suit and debuted the Chevelle in 1964, sandwiched between the Chevy II/Nova and the Impala/Bel Air/ Biscayne. The car would be quite successful and run through 1977 after which the Malibu moniker took over. Looking to have been long ago forgotten, this ’65 Chevelle convertible is in a barn in Charlestown, Indiana. Little information is provided so an unknown amount of work will be needed. Listed here on Facebook Marketplace, this Chevy is offered at $8,000. Thanks for the tip, Chuck Foster.
With just two photos and practically no description, we must make some assumptions about this drop-top. If you wanted a Chevelle convertible in 1965, 10,637 Malibu’s were built. Or you could buy one of the 9,128 SS editions that were also produced. Or you could have gotten hold of one of the 315 300s that were sold only in Canada. We’re guessing this one is the former, a Malibu with either a 283 or 327 V8 and a Powerglide automatic. The canvas top has rotted away, so the interior is probably a huge mess. And there’s no telling how much damage some small woodland creatures may have caused. For the asking price, I’d want a little more effort and info.
Hmmm two pictures and an 8K dollar asking price when you know the entire interior has been infested with vermin. Pass!
Been watching the television again. I like the 65 Chevelle but not this one.
I heard that Dan Blocker (Hoss from TV’s Ponderosa) had a Z16 convertible, supposedly the only one GM built, and just for him. Anybody know the story?
Ah, the legendary Z16 convertible. Some say it was built for a Chevrolet executive. Some say it was built for promotional purposes and was bought by a GM employee off the factory used car lot. Some say it still exists, hidden away in a private collection. Some say it never existed. The only thing that people seem to agree on is that nobody knows for sure if it existed or if it exists.
There were 200 Z16’s built. Only around 72 remain and one just sold for $400k. I’d have to see what’s left under this one. $8k isn’t bad if not all rusted out.
I know very little about GM codes but I’m assuming that Z16 was the 396 Chevelle. A next door neighbor had a one about 15 years ago and it set outside for a year or so but I figured he was going to restore it. Wrong. I tasked him where it went and he had pulled the engine and sold the body. He collects big block engines, some very rare and the 396 went into his hoard. I’ve always been mopar but would have bought that Chevelle if I had known in advance.
Google it! It’s there! It was yellow and Dan bought it.
Gary…’Google’ it. It was yellow and Dan bought it.
I googled it. Blocker’s Z-16 was / is a coupe with a vinyl top.
Glad that’s straightened out!
