Storage Unit Gasser Find: 1955 Chevrolet

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

For those of you with dreams of having a vintage Chevrolet gasser, this storage unit find might be just the car for you! It’s up for sale here on eBay, where bidding has risen to $4,250 as I write. It’s located in Pomeroy, Ohio.

The seller characterizes the car as having been purchased by a family member after having been stored in a pole barn since 1981 or 1982. The seller bought it from a family member and has a clear title to the car. From what we are told, although the body appears rust-free, there is some work needed in the driver’s side foot well and trunk floor. Body mounts are needed as well, although there is a set included. That tilt nose is fiberglass, by the way, and needs hinges installed.

There’s not a whole lot you can tell about the interior from this picture. Of  course, if you are going to continue the gasser conversion, it won’t matter much to you what the interior looks like, right?

There’s one problem with this car–or perhaps you will look at is as an opportunity! No engine is included with the car, although a four-speed transmission of unknown origin is included.

Looking in the trunk, we see a lot of trim components as well as a set of new fender well” headers. At least one bumper is included too. I’m a little torn on this one. You can see a lot of pretty 1955 gassers in this search. Part of me would like to finish this project as it was going to be intended. Part of me would like to change it to a different type of custom. There’s even a little part of me that would like to refurbish or restore the car. But I’m more interested in what you would do with this project car! Tell us in the comments!

Looks like a candidate for a Two Lane Blacktop replica.

Or a replica of Bob Falfa’s 55 Chevy that John Milner’s 32 Ford deuce coupe raced in “American Graffiti”

That was actually the same car.

Same car. The ’55 Chevy in 2 Lane Blacktop was indeed Bob Falfa’s car,( with some mods, paint, hood scoop, etc.) and showed up on a street racing episode of Adam-12, as well.

I have Johnny Lightning die cast models of both cars still in the boxes. My favorites of all time.

Very interesting find. Can’t tell from the listing if it has a straight axle installed already, which would make a big difference in the value. A fun project and decent starting point if the price is reasonable.

I just now put $6000 on it and was immediately outbid. This one is going to be a fist fight.

A little known fact is that the car Taylor and Wilson drove in Two-Lane Blacktop was also the same car Harrison Ford drove in American Graffiti.

I had a Mobil gas station at the time (of Star Wars release), and there was a woman (a very weird woman) who worked at the record store next door, who was a Harrison Ford groupie. She had seen Star Wars more than 100 times.

She usually dressed somewhat like Elvira MOTD. She wore black dresses that showed her ample bosom, black stockings, nail polish that alternated between blood red and black, and her hair was raven black almost to her waist.

One day she showed up at my gas station in a (you guessed it) 1955 Chevy, in proper primer! She said she was going to work on it until it was exactly like the car Harrison Ford drove, that she quit her job, and was moving to Hollywood to get a job as a secretary at 20th Century Fox, to try to meet him.

      Strange days.

If I can buy the ’55 right, I will. Probably not.

In another little known fact, Jim Reed’s Corvette in the last few episodes of Adam-12, also showed up in the 1974 movie “Earthquake”, and was also the same car as Red Forman’s Corvette in “That 70’s Show”.

The last time the seller had it listed on eBay it had a $10,000 bin. His reserve is likely in that neighborhood. He needs to roll it into the open and take better pictures to justify that price.

I always complain that I see too many tri fives,
but I do love them!,having built around a dozen
model kits of them when I was young.I would love to
see this done in a wild street freak style,60’s gasser.
Lotsa candy/pearl,chromed out,fat tires and colored
plexi glass. With a built sbc stroker.
55 chevys will always be timeless, and in demand.Price is getting pretty high it seems
to start a tri five project?

Problem is, too many people that don’t really have a sense of what cars are worth but see something they want and have deep pockets. This drives the prices into the stratosphere for everyone else that is looking to restore something out of love for it. Paying more than double what a car is worth, then paying someone else an ungodly amount to restore it just ruins it for the one’s who have a love for doing this and is wanting it for a keeper.
Yuppies did the same thing to Harley Davidson motorcycles. Was a time they were a very affordable motorcycle. Then the greed took over. All stemming from Arnold riding a Fat boy for a movie.

I’m not sure what makes this a “gasser” over a regular project shoebox? The glass front end? Uninstalled headers? IMO there isn’t much that says A/Gas to justify the seller’s gasser bait.

Flat black does not simply make a race car….

With a small block, it would’ve been a B/G (unless there was a supercharger, then it would have been a BB/G. However; with no rear attention (apparently), including but not limited to no wheel well tubs, and no cage, no suspension reinforcements, I agree with your assessment completely.

“Falfa? Hey nobody can beat him, man!”
    “I ain’t nobody, DORK!”
Haha! I always loved that line from American Graffiti and that bad to the bone big block powered ’55.

+Troy s – The car itself was in fact a BBC powered monster. However; the movie’s theme “Where were you in ’62” would’ve precluded a BBC having been the motivator.

In ’62, of course there were the ubiquitous SBCs… but it was common to see these gasser Chevys powered by nail-valve Buicks, 394 Olds’s, and the occasional 1st Gen Hemi. If it had really been cutting edge, a 409 Chevy or a 421 Super Duty Pontiac would’ve been the ticket.

Yeah, no 427 BBC’s in ’62, that’s for sure, which is what powered this rod. Probably supposed to be a 409, who really knows. Could never figure out which of the two ’55’s they actually used for American Graffiti.

Without any proof of what this car really is and the Mechanicals being very questionable it may be cheaper to just buy all brand new Body and Frame

“it has 69 chevelle bucket seats that are the correct seat frames for these older chevys.” huh? Is he trying to say that the bucket seats are the type typically used in gasser recreations? I’m not even sure that that is the case…
