Stored 34 Years: Low-Mile 1966 Ford Fairlane

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

The Fairlane nameplate began appearing on Ford products in 1955, At first a full-size car, it became a mid-size in the 1960s. They were restyled in 1966 to match the full-size Galaxies and so forth, gaining stacked dual headlights. This ’66 edition of the 2-door hardtop was garage-kept and in storage from 1988 until recently. It’s in good overall condition having been cleaned up by the seller. Located in Hudson Valley, New York, this Ford is available here on eBay where only a single bid of $14,000 has been cast so far.

Ford built 317,274 of the fifth generation Fairlane’s in 1966, continuing to fall second to Chevrolet’s Chevelle. Nearly a quarter of production was body style 63B, the code for a Fairlane 500 hardtop at 75,947 units. This nice example was owned by a single family until recently and we’re told the mileage is under 45,000 because it was in confinement for 34 years. The Maroon Metallic paint shined up nicely once the seller cleaned it and took the polisher to it.

After replacing the gas tank, brakes, tires, and battery were told this Ford fires right up and is street-ready. The company’s venerable 289 cubic inch V8 is under the hood (so we’re told, no pic) flanked by an automatic transmission. Everything is said to be numbers matching, so no motor or tranny swaps have been made here. The seller can forward videos of the car in action to prospective buyers.

Rust is not an issue with this older vehicle, but of course, there are some scratches and dings and a small dent on the trunk lid. The original owners have sent along loads of paperwork, including its current registration, title, and original owner’s manual. The family’s great grandfather first bought the car at their local dealer in Nyack, New York.

Very Nice. 10 years ago this would have been a NO BRAINER, But a few other things have started to fail and I couldn’t enjoy it to the MAX, Hopefully some one makes a NICE RIDE of it.

Unless the owner converted this to front wheel drive, it should NOT have snow tires in the front.

I just hope that the gentleman that is buffing the car out knows what he is doing because if he does not… I simple bath would have sufficed. I would love to be the one the make it road worthy again.

I spoke this guy last fall when he had it listed on Craigslist, as I live not far from him. Unfortunately, he’s convinced that it’s a mid-twenties car. He said that he was going to get it cleaned up, but the price would go up accordingly. I told him that I’d be willing to pay in the mid-teens, which was based on Hagerty’s valuation, but he wasn’t interested. I was going to take a ride to see it anyway, but he took the listing down. Anyhow, it will be interesting to see where it goes.

It would be a mid twenties car if it was a 390 powered GTA

You’re absolutely correct, a 1966 Fairlane GTA with correct S-code 390 in this condition would certainly bring in the mid-twenties. All in all, this is still a nice Fairlane and not a huge project.

I owned a 661/2 500 series fast back with 390 2 barrel. Sold when I went and served in military for 950.00. Great vehicle but the price is not. I do wish more vehicles of this size were available today.

It is a nice looking ’66 and yes it would bring more money if it was a 390 S Code GTA. Like the taillights and bought a set of lenses today for my ’67 XL 500. Have to make modifications for the lenses/bezels to fit because the ’66 are aluminum and the ’67 are heavier pot metal and mount differently. Fairlanes are increasing in price and there is one at Gateway in Kansas that they are asking $177,000!
