Stored A Long Time: 1965 Chevrolet Malibu

c12

Looking awfully original, this 1965 Chevrolet Malibu “has been in storage for many years.” It certainly looks the part! It’s available here on eBay and is located in Harrington, Delaware. Bidding is just over $1,500 as I write but has not yet met the reserve.

While I can see some issues at the front of the driver’s door, I’m pretty happy with the condition in general. Based on the shine on the hood even through the dust and dirt, I think the paint on this car could be improved a lot just by a proper cleaning and polishing–which has me wondering why the seller hasn’t done it. Sure, take all the pictures you want before cleaning the car, but then clean it and let us see how good it can look! Oh well.

We’re missing one wheel cover, but even the top looks pretty decent. I don’t know if that’s a glass or plastic rear window; if it’s glass there’s a lot of hope that you won’t have to do anything to it. Looking at the rear wheel, I have to wonder what a set of nicely painted steel wheels would do for the overall cosmetics. Maybe red line tires?

Unfortunately, the seller doesn’t show us the interior, but they do tell us that the seat has been removed (that doesn’t mean it’s gone forever–it’s included in the auction) and that the carpet is gone and will need replacing. They also mention floor rust to the rear of the seat. What’s that? You were expecting a small block V8? So was I. The 194 cubic inch inline six runs and is attached to an automatic transmission. I would have a hard time resisting putting a 327 or 350 in, but that’s me–you might be perfectly satisfied with the six. Tell us what you’d do with this car!

It’s probably just me, but I think that I would have used a different pin up model to promote this vehicle.

If you don’t mind, please take a look. My first car, which is tucked away in the garage, was a 65 Malibu Conv. Adding another one is not out of reason, depending on the $$ and overall condition – especially the frame. You can hit me up at gary@jjclarkinc.com if direct communication is ok with you. Thanks.

I’d DEFINATELY ditch the six for an eight! 350 all the way………matching numbers or not!

Mustang looks pretty dusty to, is that town in Delaware that dusty, do you need a paper dust mask to live there ?

Probably not “dust”. Coming from the fields they spread chicken litter on. It’s a active farming community around here.

An estate sale find? Both seem to have an equivalent amount of dust.

Looks like a plastic window to me.

You take pictures in a shop right next to the lift but don’t include any shots on the lift???

Having once owned a Chevelle with a six, I’d have no qualms whatsoever with another one although pairing a 194 to an automatic would almost seem futile; the automatic does rob a lot of horsepower. All that aside, I’d tackle the body issues before I’d even consider doing anything with the motor. A six-cylinder Chevelle convertible; you’d have the only one at the show and shine…

The 194 six would have been somewhat of a rarity….most Malibus were 230 I6 or 283 V-8. My Dad had a ’65 sedan with the former and an Uncle a ’65 sedan with the 283.

The six gives it character. A 4-speed automatic would be a good upgrade from the PG.

I would ask for pictures of under the car and the frame. Nice original convertible. Lot of potential for this car. LS with 4 speed auto & a posi come to mind. :-)

Alright, outta my way!! Yank out that wimpy 6 banger and put a fire-breathing 383 stroker, 5-speed tremec, 4:11 gears, 4-wheel disc breaks and go have fun. After paying off all the credit card debt from the mechanical build, begin the purdy party with canary yellow paint, black roll and pleat seats and doors, black top, some Foose wheels, and a killer sound system. Stick the key in the ignition, twist to the right, and let the gooood tiiiimes roooolll!!!! (and don’t look back)

Hey GOPAR,I like the way you think. Cept for the 4:11s and the FOOSE wheels. Its a drop top,so you want to be able to take this ol girl on the highway. As far as the wheels go ,I can’t stand Big wheels !!So for me a nice set of painted steel wheels with some doggy dish hub caps. But hey thats just me, its your car do what you want.

OK, call me a purist (I’m usually not) but if the drivetrain is good just fix the rust issues, replace your missing parts, maybe a couple of Clifford Performance parts for grins, and a thorough detail and drive it. You could empty your checkbook (well, maybe my checkbook) creating a great SS killer and not be able to enjoy it anywhere near as much as making a great driver out of it. I could see doing that and over time sourcing a wrecked late model Camaro or ‘Vette and swapping an entire drivetrain. Different strokes for different folks — as they say.

The more I look at this car, the more I like it as is, and I don’t care for the 64 Malibu in general. This one is just so funky. Looks like the interior was white–new seats would really pop with the maroon paint. Just add a hubcap and polish it up good.

I noticed another weird detail of this guys garage…he has a full size console TV suspended from the ceiling!
