Stuck in the Woods: 1968 Ford Mustang

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

From its birth in 1964 until the mid-1970s, the Ford Mustang was the sales leader in the “pony car” market segment it helped to create. The original design got a mild styling refresh in 1967, so the 1968 editions went mostly unchanged. This ’68 Mustang looks to be a regular sport coupe, but it’s been left out in the woods for many years and its structural integrity would have to be suspect at best. Portersville, Pennsylvania is part of the wooded area and this ‘Stang is available here on craigslist for $3,000.

The 1968 Mustang wasn’t as big a seller as it had been two years earlier (317,000 vs. 607,000 copies), but it was still thousands of units ahead of #2, the Chevy Camaro (which had debuted in 1967). We don’t know the history of the seller’s forlorn Ford except that it has a six-cylinder engine that’s numbers matching (200 cubic inches?). And the seller is adamant that you have to take the whole car, but you’re going to have to dig everything out to see if it’s all there.

Whether there is a viable car here to restore or even much in the way of usable parts for another project is up for debate. There is more than one car stuck out in the sticks with no indication of what’s keeping the Mustang company. They may have been in a barn at one time that fell down (or blew down) around the autos years ago and it’s all been left to the elements. Would you take a chance on this “project”?

$3K?!? April 1st is six months away! It would probably cost more to dig these sad remains out than their worth as scrap!

With the noted modifications shouldn’t it be listed as a 1969 Grande Crape?

A project??? Please! Beyond any repair or restoration! Pay $50 to haul it to the junkyard. Main question: “Did the car run when parked?”

OMG… it’s numbers-matching? Really? You mean I have the opportunity to buy a numbers-matching pile of scrap metal that used to be a six-cylinder ’69 Grande? $3000 is a bargain for a rare gem like this! Someone put decades of neglect into creating this masterpiece, and $3000 is a modest sum to pay for all that dereliction.

I don’t even think they found the Barn let alone a 1968 Mustang with matching numbers! The numbers match right in with all the rust and dirt! I think he should clear coat that thing and save the patina!! Reminds me of one of those pictures you have to circle all the items that have to do with Mustangs! SMH

After reading the original ad, I think the seller understands the condition, as he states “must take the whole car.” He knows someone will want a part or two, and then drive off without cleaning up his mess!!

“Barn Finds” has officially sunk to a new low with this offering. The good news is they may have finally reached the bottom, the only way it could worse is if someone tries to sell a pile of rust dust.

As an (not an opinion) observation the 2 cars were dead and were left side by side in a grave yard. Sadly unmarked graves that could have had tomb stones with an epitaph that read RIP “Rust In Pieces”. Would it be a morbid act to disturb a grave site once the cars (over time) became partially buried? Halloween is outa sight!

You’re kidding right ? This is what it’s come too. Maybe I should post the Studebaker I have out back in the woods as a parts car…..gotta be a rare gem worth $$$$. LMBO This laughable, who posts this crap?

Reminds me of a Volvo 1800S that I got. Seller needed it gone because he sold his cabin and the land it was on. Poor car had been parked in the woods, Vandals broke out all the glass, years of rotting leaves and ?? inside the car (same squishy stuff as under your feet when you walk in the woods and not on a path). 4×4 Suburban got it to the road and we loaded it on the trailer. Rustiest 1800 I’ve ever seen but here and there it had solid pieces to help others in need. Free for the hauling with title but…

I don’t see anything of use on this Mustang.

That poor thing is more a part of the earth now than an automobile. Getting it out of there is likely a task that will need a wheelbarrow and shovel. Never seen rot like the windshield pillar and top of the door before.

Maybe with a rototiller you could just turn it into the ground and call it a day. A friend used to say “There’s an a$$ for every seat.” However, I see no seats in this car, so I suppose it is done.

I love 69 Mustangs but this doesn’t have $300 worth of parts never mind 3grand. A numbers matching 6cyl is nothing to brag about even if it were nice in 1969.

Ran when parked, I know what I’ve got so no low ballers need call!
No reputable junk dealer would touch this with a ten foot pole for fear of tetanus. Just a pile of Grande rust.

This WAS a 1969 Mustang, nothing left of it now, far beyond saving.
It will cost money to dispose of this mess, much less pay anything for it

Good luck even walking through his yard. Looks like his personal garbage dump. He probably got a citation from the city to clean up his property or be fined so he figured someone would pay him to haul away his junk.

My daughter had a camp in upstate NY and strolling in the woods I found an old Crosley that had collapsed and was mostly buried. Although I mentioned it at the time, she sold the place without ever capitalizing on that great windfall. Sad.
