From Ralph – The Avanti had been stored in my garage for about 30 years and I knew it was time to find it a new home. I put the car on craiglist and on a Studebaker web site and received some calls but no serious interest. I came across the Barn Finds web site and would check it out every morning. One day there was another Avanti similar to mine featured as a BF Exclusive. The next day I saw that the car had already been sold!
So, I checked out the”Sell Your Car” section of your site and it sounded like a good deal. I put the car info and pictures together and sent them in. The day the ad went up I got about 10 responses in a couple of hours! The car was too far for some and not exactly what others were looking for.
In the end, I had one person very interested in the Avanti. We e-mailed questions and answers back and forth and agreed on a deal. The pictures I enclosed are from the day of the pick up. I’m in New Jersey and the gentleman who purchased the car is in California so it was shipped across the country. My experience with Barn Finds was great and your write up for the ad was very nice. Thanks for all your help!
Thanks for listing the Avanti with us Ralph! We are glad the car found a good home and that the experience was a good one. If any of you have an old car parked in the garage that’s just collecting duct, please consider letting us help you find a buyer. When priced right, most Exclusives find a buyer within a couple of days. The process is easy and the risk is low. Take a look at the Submission page for more information about how it all works.
Nice car, what was he asking for it?
His asking was $8k.
Good price
Nice, congratulations! That was smooth.
I’m thinking of selling my Avanti, too – BaT or Barnfinds? Hmmmm . . .
We are A LOT cheaper! And we only charge if your car sells. Email me if you have any questions: jesse@barnfinds.com
A friend, boss, had one like this, Black, he lived in Old Tappan N.J. In fact it looks like his old house in the pictures, he retired and vacationed around the country in an R.V. with his wife Annie before settling in North Carolina, Sadly he passed away before I could reconnect with him, I wonder if this would be his old Avanti ? Tommy Ray from Newark Street, Old Tappan, New Jersey.
i wish I had seen it I would have purchased it no questions asked I been wanting one for some time now. and i am not that far i live in massachusetts. ( originally from passaic N.J )
Here’s one I found on CL in MA doing a really quick search:
https://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/cto/6002562280.html
I also mentioned one in NH that I drove by daily in Ralph’s original post.
These are out there, just need to look.
Nice looking car…
Yes, on my list of must haves. I hope the new owner puts some miles on her.
It was what, 15-20 years ago, that if you really wanted an Avanti, you could still order it any way you wanted it.
My time flys. It was 30-35yrs ago. They was built in Youngstown Ohio on a caprice frame. A little larger than the original but they we’re pretty nice.
Thanks Barn find guys for providing an invaluable service. Fingers crossed here that BF doesn’t turn all hoity toity like another site I used to frequent. You used to BRING A TRAILER because you found a gem that needed some work. Now on that site you bring a trailer because you don’t dare get the tire treads dirty. Most importantly ,another garage ornament has been saved!
So, what’s the deal on seeing cars of paid advertisers? I thought anything new would be on the daily email; not so for paid adverts? That’s disappointing. I presume that means I have to visit the site daily?
Sorry, but can you explain what you mean? All the cars featured on the homepage go out in the email updates.
I love stories with happy endings. And bourbon. Or stories about happy owners with bourbon. Seriously though, nice car. Glad it found a home.
Here’s one I’m trying to buy……..
Odd looking cars, but than, Studebaker was famous for odd looking cars. But quite collectable today, should be worth more than 8k. Not much info, what year, and is it supercharged
The lines from just past the front remind me of the later Iso Griffo. Hope I spelled that right. I sometimes wonder what designer borrowed what from whom.
I sold my ’63 R1 Avanti this past October for 14.5k. It was largely original except the crumby 70’s era repaint with 70,000 miles. everything worked including A/C. These things drive great. I really miss it.
This was my family members car I remember sitting in the car in the garage when I would go over my aunts house for christmas and Easter. I’m glad to see it’s finally going to be saved.
