Super Sonic Transport: 1968 AMC Javelin SST

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Compared to others of the muscle car era it seems that you don’t see as many of the American Motors Corporation’s Javelin, especially one that is an SST version. For this reason, this one might be worth taking a look at. Found here on Craigslist in Topeka, KS this one will need a full restoration to bring it back to its former glory.

The SST, or Super Sonic Transport, version of the Javelin was AMC’s unique name for their second-year car. This was the premium model of the Javelin and there were just over 26,000 units produced. This is a higher number for a unique version, but still unique nonetheless.

While the seller only states that it’s a V8 it could be the 290 cubic inch version if it’s still the factory engine. It is said to run with a little gas being poured into the carburetor. Also, an interesting option here is the factory air conditioning.

It’s hard to tell what might be missing from the interior, but the car appears to be mostly intact. It looks to be fairly rough, but is it significant enough to restore back to original condition? And is the $2,200 price tag too high, too low, or just about right for this project?

Had a 390 4 spd SST in high school. That thing was FAST!!!

That is a sad Javelin. I had a 1969 SST with the Hurst shift package and a 343. Like a thousand other guys I wish I hadn’t traded it in on a “family” car.

Well from the looks of the quarter panels and the addition of what looks like snow tires this beast has a belly full of rust underneath. The trunk most likely is half gone. I’ll pass.

I’d buy it immediately if the vinyl top was still in place ! Saw a lot of late 70’s TV commercials where you could make your old vinyl car top look like new ! There were some bonus offers too ! Got a smokeless ashtray.

Do have concerns about the drainage channel in the lower left quarter. May be clogged lol. The stuff used to restore the vinyl top can be sprayed on to fix rust. Like magic,,,

Lot of new writers, welcome aboard,,,however, while SST does stand for Super Sonic Transport, in AMC’s case, it meant Super Sports Touring. Javelin changed everything for AMC. It more than made up for the other,,,shall we say,,less desirable models (Marlin, for one). While it portrayed the ultimate muscle car image(still looking for the ” It’s a great car, dad, I just made it better” ad), truth is, probably 90% of the Javelin’s sold were more sedate cars, like this. Plenty still out there, this, while rebuildable, would take a lot. They had some great ads. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2j04v2XrVwg

      Howard,

Thanks for the comment. On page 35 of his book, AMC Muscle Cars, Larry Mitchell states that it could have been either way as part of how AMC marketed the car. He referenced this from the 1968 full-line brochure, but I was unable to find an imagine to verify that. Either way, both names are appropriate and seemingly left up to the owner or enthusiast to choose.

      Howard,

According to the 1968 full-line brochure AMC states, “Super Sports Touring? Or Super Sonic Transport? Or just plain SST? Take your pick.”

      Howard,

According to the 1968 full-line brochure AMC stated, “Super Sports Touring? Or Super Sonic Transport? Or just plain ‘SST’? Take your pick.” All were appropriate, but it looks like it was up to the owner or enthusiast to decide.

The rear passenger quarter appears to have the outline of the 290 emblem.

I briefly had a ’68 SST with the 343, bought it for $150 in 1982. Had certainly seen better days but hadn’t rusted much. Did some body work to it, never titled it and sold it to a friend who drove it between college in Philly and NY.
That car would beat just about any new car on the straights. Remember some surprised Vette owners.
Was so hot it eventually caught fire, friend used a six pack to hose down the carb. Rebuilt it and it ran for a few more months before finding a permanent curbside spot.

Lovely looking Javelin. It looks like a good candidate for restoration. I have to ask, are you sure it’s an SST? Judging by the grille, it looks like an AMX.

It is a Javelin SST, it is too long for an AMX and from the passenger rear quarter it was a 290 V8. Also, one of the fenders still says Javelin and it has a Javelin hood.

If this rig has an engine larger than the 290 or replacement 304 then asking price , IMO, is dead on.
Buy and part out will more than recoup cost.
As someone pointed out most Early Javelins were sedate autos.
Built as least expensively using off the shelf inventory of older rigs.
