Survivor Third Gen: 1992 Pontiac Firebird

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

This 1992 Pontiac Firebird is in seemingly very nice condition, with gorgeous factory paint, original alloy wheels, dent- and ding-free body panels, and no other obvious flaws to report. When looking for a survivor Firebird or Trans Am of this era, it’s difficult to find anything other than a high-priced Turbo Trans Am or perfectly preserved GTA, as the plain-Jane Firebird wasn’t typically put away for long-term preservation. This example bucks that trend, likely just as a result of good fortune, as it has under 80,000 original miles and remains bone stock. Find it here on eBay with an asking price of $14,900 and the option to submit a best offer.

The early ’90s Firebird took a trip to aerodynamics finishing school, leaving with far smoother lines than it went in with. The result was a new nose design and revised rear fascia that helped set it further apart from the Camaro and also look quite fresh, even all these years later. The spirit of the first-year models from the third generation redesign was still there, but taking inspiration from the “Banshee” show car made the final year models before the migration to the fourth generation platform look far newer than its dated interiors would otherwise suggest. While I do like this car, make mine a convertible with the GTA wheels, please.

As I said, the interior didn’t get any major updates for the duration of the third-generation model’s existence, which is a shame given the exterior appearances were much improved. The cabin features acres of dull grab plastics, mouse-fur cloth buckets, and coordinating door panels. The factory head unit has been replaced with a modern alternative, but the rest of the interior remains unchanged. But, the good news is the dash remains un-cracked, as these were vulnerable to breakage if left out in the sun or otherwise unprotected/untreated. The seller doesn’t specify whether the air conditioning still blows cold.

The Firebird is powered by a factory small-block V8 paired to a 700R4 automatic transmission. The engine bay is possibly the best feature of this car, as it remains in impeccable condition with no obvious alterations from stock, and hoses and other plastic components looking like they’re in near-new condition. Factory stickers and labels remain in place on the radiator cowl, and the listing states that the engine runs well and the transmission shifts great. This is a fairly basic model when you get down to it, and if it were a manual transmission, we’d really be talking about a gem of a car. But as it stands, it’s a great cruiser and hopefully, it can be snagged with a reasonable best offer.

That’s absolutely ridiculous money for a base-model Firebird with those miles. Last August, I paid $10k for an ’87 GTA 59,000 miles and needing nothing.

I hope that’s where the market is going, but it’s not there yet for this particular car.

I agree, way too much money! Maybe ten years from now with less than 10k miles, not 80k…….Wow!

I had a 88 GTA with the digital dash, that dash made the whole car seem nicer then it was… it was a very nice vehicle but the dash put it over the edge…A touch of Night Rider in a otherwise bland interior…

My other SIL bought one new in late ’91.
It was exactly like this except for the V-6
engine which powered her car. Gotta say that even with that 3800 V-6 out front, her car was really quick for what it
was. It ran well over 100 MPH all the way from Winter Haven to Kissemmee
when my BIL was stabbed by his girlfriend. It took only 20 minutes for her
and my MIL to reach him and bring him
home after getting him patched up at a
local hospital. Sis wanted a Ford Probe,
but there was a 6 month wait list to get
one at our Ford dealer in Winter Haven
so she bought the Firebird in Lakeland
because it was available and priced right. Sis would drive it for the next 8
years before it was totaled after she
loaned it to a friend. Maybe I should
show her this one, and who knows,
she just might go for it.

      91/92 was still a 3.1. 3800 wasn’t until ’95 and only optional over the 3.4.

If it was a Firehawk maybe…

A Firehawk in similar condition would be worth double what this seller is asking!

These came with carbs as late as ’92? That seems archaic.

    What size is that engine?

It was throttle-body injection after 1987, not carb.

5.0 V8 no Carb, just the air cleaner makes it look like a carb.

That’s what I thought, and that makes sense.

Seller is clueless – it says “with 4-Barrel Original and Unmodified” in the ad.

Cheaper than a Toyota Camry, and way more fun.

I have a late production 92′ TA convertible in that body color (recent repaint) with a black top and gold leather interior and gold “snow flake” wheels. It has the 5.0 MPFI and a 4L60 Trans. It has 202,000 miles and runs like a top. No leaks and has never been rebuilt. Passes CA SMOG every time. I think that $12,000 is a good price for mine. I agree the price of this offer, is a dreamer (wishful thinking).

I thought V-8 only came in Tran-Am and Formula and GTA of that area .Now I bought a brand new 92 just like this one for my wife with the V-6 and T-tops. I wish i would of bought the Tran-AM because i would of got more money for it when i sold 2yrs ago. but back then the car insurance was kinda high. so i went with V-6, no complaints in performance or gas mileage, (24 mile per gal.) When I sold it had 72,000 miles on it, the only thing it needed was new tires the tailpipe split at the seam and the air-cond. compressor leak. sold it for $4000.
