Swedish Stock: Saab Sonett Collection

saabsonnet1

I noticed a strange uptick in the number of Saab Sonett listings on eBay last night, and sure enough, someone was unloading 3 barn-find-fresh examples. The green one above is a ’73 and looks like the best one in the lot, with a good body and an engine that ran over a decade ago. The bidding opens at $750 with no reserve here on eBay. Also up for grabs is a very rough ’71 with no engine and lots of spiderwebs – but the rear window louvers might be a rare factory option worth adding to an OEM+ example. That car opens at $500 here on eBay and is also said to have a decent body. Finally, there is a ’74 Sonett Azure here on eBay that similarly ran 13 years ago and has untold parts missing. I’m not sure what Azure refers to here – special edition or special color, perhaps? It must be unique since it has a vanity plate that spells AZURIZE! Regardless, it is also available for a $500 opening bid and no reserve. Which one would you choose?

I think I’d have to go with the green one just for the shock value of the color! Looks like someone wanted the one with the louvers the most, though…

Probable the worst car made in the seventies other than an Audi 100. You set with your feet off center of your body because the pedals were not in line with the steering wheel. Transmission were terrible and hard to repair if you could find parts for them. Extremely hard to enter or exit. Putrid colors, well thats enough, two good things although they did not sell many and the German V4 engine was one of the best power plants of th era.

Azure might refer to the blue color, although it must have faded a great deal over the years. I secretly like these little weirdos, although I admit I’ve never driven one.

The green one may have run 10 years ago, but the engine looks likes it’s been sitting outside with the hood off since then.

I worked in a Saab dealership about those years. Always considered how much fun one of these might be with a Capri V6 transplant

Would the rear wheels of a Sonett even touch the ground with a Capri V6 installed up front?
