Bright Canyon Red looks great on this 1979 Dodge D100 Sweptline Custom pickup, or it did at one time. It’s wearing a sun-faded patina look now, but so are a lot of us. The seller has this truck posted here on craigslist in Castle Rock, Colorado, south of Denver, and they’re asking $5,000. Here is the original listing, and thanks to Mike F. for the tip!
The seller has this truck named Clayton. Clayton has two big round eyes as opposed to some of his relatives that had four rectangular eyes, depending on the trim level and/or model. Are there a pair of bumper-mounted fog lights that aren’t bent? It’s been so long since I’ve seen a perfectly-straight set of fog lights that I can’t even remember. The seller doesn’t show us the passenger side at all, not even a fleeting glimpse, sadly. I hope Clayton looks good on that side.
I’m stunned at the condition of the rear bumper, they’re usually bent, dented, rusty, and otherwise trashed. This one looks like new for the most part. The Shreveport, Louisiana Dodge dealership stamp on it is also very cool. This is a regular 131-inch wheelbase eight-foot long bed Sweptline box, or bed, but there was a 115-inch wheelbase 6.5-foot short bed available. Dodge’s Utiline “stepside” box was also available in both sizes. Inside the bed looks like, well, like a truck should probably look, used but not too abused.
Oddly enough, this is the only interior photo. We don’t get even a fleeting glimpse (this is sounding familiar) of the dash at all for some reason. Why? A message to the seller may be your only chance of seeing what it looks like. I can’t imagine it’s bad enough that they purposely left out a photo of it, but maybe they wanted to show what may be a reupholstered seat, and it looks almost perfect. The seller shows two underside photos, including this one with a big hornet / bee / wasp / other-stinging-insect nest. It looks solid under there.
The standard engine was a 225 slant-six, but the VIN decodes to Clayton having Dodge’s optional 318-cu.in. OHV V8, which would have had 145 horsepower and 235 lb-ft of torque. A 360 V8 was also optional but a 318 should be enough for most of us. It’s backed by a three-speed automatic sending power to the rear wheels and this one has good tires and brakes, a new battery, a new water pump and a new blower motor. That reminds me, I need a new blower motor in my little Dodge D-50. Hagerty is at $6,600 for a #4 fair-condition truck, how much would you pay for Clayton the D100?
The seller is incorrect- this is not a Dodge “Sweptline” pickup. Sweptline refers to 1961-1971 year model Dodge trucks. The cab and, essentially, the entire truck was different from this one.
John, that’s what I thought, but page 4 of this 1979 Dodge truck brochure mentions the Sweptline or Utiline body style.

Well…… there byou go… Scotty, you do some serious research on your write ups, thats for sure!!! Thanks for posting the brochures it was great seeing them. The Step side along with the Sweptside models. Old Clayton here actually looks very solid here, a 318 and a Torqueflite is plenty to get you going on the highway.
My comment was supposed to say Sweptline, however, my autocorrect had Sweptside instead. I think we should really name it Auto INCORRECT lol.
Love it a basic truck to truck things 😎
A basic truck that you could back in the day get. Unlike now lol😂
Buy it use it as is. Price is right in my opinion. Good luck to buyer and seller!
Seller mis-identifies the 318 as a Poly! The data plate with ‘DeSoto’ and ‘Fargo’ in it tells me it was probably built in Canada. Was it? Yes, sweptline = slab side, utiline = fendered bed. This would be fun with the A833 4 speed.Love the red!
Bottom right corner of the data plate says
Made In USA.
This was one of the rarer trucks that were built at the old Jefferson plant between the time it built the last C Body Chryslers in 78 and the K Car in 80.
Looks like the 10 or 12 year old truck we all bought and ran another 10 or 12. This is a good one to spend your money on, one that you can fix, one that will be around another 20.
The Poly V8 went away in 1966. New for 1967 was the LA 318 V8. To: RWD Drifter. There is a possibility that this truck could have been built at the Old Tecumseh Road Truck Plant in Windsor, Ont. Canada. Trucks built at this location have a sticker: Made in Canada, gray background black lettering mounted on the driver door frame by the door stryker.
I have a 2025 Ford Maverick that has a higher GVWR. A car that identifies as a truck.
Yet the Dodge has a bed that is 41 inches longer than the Maverick, along with a much higher towing capacity and a transmission that is exponentially stronger than the Maverick’s CVT. Dodge has a higher payload capacity as well. Maverick is definitely a car.
MUCH HIGHER TOWING CAPACITY you claim, what is the D100 Dodge trucks towing capacity? AI list it as 3500 lbs depending on axle ratio and suspension, LESS then the Mavericks if that is correct. Provide the link with the infor.
You state the “transmission that is exponentially stronger than the Maverick’s CVT” The Maverick doesn’t have a CVT.
And since your baffling us with your brilliance, tell us what the payload is for the D100.
Dodge D100 max payload 2400#, max tow 4000# 8’bed 3man cab.
Maverick 5 person cab 4.5′ bed 1500# payload, max tow 4000# w/ 2.0 Ecoboost AWD and tow package.
Ecoboost 240 hp/5500 on premium fuel
I have a 18 Ram 2500 we pull a 12′ bumper pull aluminum trailer if I put a finished steer in there@3500 gross trailer weight and he turns around while I’m on the road you know it. You might get by with the D100, my guess with the Maverick you’d be out of control.
So Jim, you seem to be on the same level as David G. You think the D100 Dodge can haul 2400 lbs which is 1/2 of the gross weight at 4800? Your saying the V8 trucks empty weight is 2400 lbs, I would bet against that any day.
The GVWR of the Maverick is higher, the truck is heavier then the Dodge due to gas engine, batteries and electric motors and all wheel drive. You guess incorrectly that the Maverick would be out of control with a 3500 lb tow load. I should know as I have towed more with it with no problems. Please realize in todays litigious society, a truck would never be sold with ratings anywhere near their actual limits. Your 2018 RAM 2500 is rated to tow over 16,000 lbs. I can’t see you have problems at 3500 lbs.
Located in Castle Rock, CO. That’s where I went o High School!
If it’s been awhile, you wouldn’t believe the place now. Overrun with development.
Listing update: the seller has taken down the ad so someone must have grabbed this Dodge.
