Tahoe Turquoise Pony: 1966 Ford Mustang

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Ford sold 607,000 Mustangs in 1966, a record that was hard to beat both then and now. The country was captivated by Mustang Mania, and it was hard not to see one on every street corner. The seller has a “new condition” coupe that’s finished in my favorite Mustang color – Tahoe Turquoise. It’s in beautiful shape and is reasonably priced at $16,000 north of Seattle, Washington, and here on craigslist. Bravo to “Curvette” for another tasteful tip!

We don’t know the history of this Mustang, but it appears to be a gently used survivor or an older restoration. The odometer reads 70,000 miles, and that could be legit at just 1,200 miles per year. Some of the photos are date-stamped from two years ago, so this may not be the first attempt to find the Ford a new home. Has it been owned by one or two folks, or will the title have a longer story to tell?

The body, paint, vinyl top (sort of rare on an early Mustang), and interior are all up to snuff. Besides the vinyl, the only options may have been the 289 cubic inch V8 (2 or 4-barrel?), automatic transmission (no console), and power steering. We assume the “pony” drives as well as it looks, and no mention is made of any mechanical needs.

Getting in touch with the seller may be difficult. He/she wants no emails and prefers phone calls, yet no number appears in the listing or any of the photos. I’m surprised the asking price isn’t higher because of the Ford’s apparent condition, so we hope the ad and car are on the level.

Looks like a great car for the money. By clicking the “reply” button on the Ad right above “1966” you can get the seller’s phone number: (206) 401-XXXX

My mom bought a 1 yr old ‘66 equipped just like this but in candy apple red on black. I learned to drive and got my license in it and owned it later on. Great little cars and easy to work on and you can almost build one from a catalog. This price seems excellent if it’s as good as it looks.

More photos than usual for a Craigslist ad. The interior and engine compartment look fine, but no photos of underside. While no signs of rust above, the paint looks like the typical faded metalic blue that I had on my 64 Ford wagon. It may be original but hard to tell in these photos. Figure a paint expense to the cost, depending on what you want?

Underside photos in my area are rare since rust isn’t an issue. I’d never thought of it until I saw people on forums mention it. If I was selling a car into the local market I probably wouldn’t include any, since I wouldn’t ship a car, but would make some available if that’s what was needed to get a potential buyer to come and see the car in person.

“the only options may have been the 289 cubic inch V8 (2 or 4-barrel?)”

    Air cleaner indicates a 2-barrel.

    Price seems very reasonable.
