The Venezuelan Hemi: 1968 Dodge Charger R/T

We’ve all read about the incredible cars that have been found in Venezuela, but none of the cars in those stories have had a Hemi! This 1968 Dodge Charger R/T was a special export for Venezuela and was equipped with fantastic 426 Hemi engine. It was found in a barn with just 23k kilometers on the odometer, that translates to 15k miles, and is all original. There’s no word in the Mecum listing if it was found in Venezuela or here in the States, but either way, it’s still wearing the dust it was found with. You can find the auction listing here on Mecum and it’s scheduled to hit the block on May 15th. Special thanks to Paul C for this tip!

If only this Mopar could talk, I’d love to hear it’s full story. Who’s the one owner that ordered it? Why did they park it? And was it found or are they the ones selling it? I have so many questions, but there’s no questioning the desirability of this hemispherical head engine! It needs to be detailed, but it looks complete and original. It’s paired to a Torqueflite 727 automatic, but there’s no word on its condition. Assume that everything needs to be rebuilt at this point.

The interior looks to be in nice shape. It’s all there and could easily be used as is. Can you imagine how exciting it was to climb into this one when it was brand new? Heck, I’d be excited to climb in right now!

I really wish Mecum would have provided more of the car’s story. It isn’t every day that a Hemi powered muscle car is discovered in a barn, especially one in Venezuela. If any of you happen to know the whole story, we sure would love to hear about it!

I had a 70 Challenger R/T. That dash isn’t an R/T dash. And a single exhaust? Unless I’m missing something, there’s something very fishy here.

Forgive me, but you really can’t see the second exhaust hanging down on the passenger side ?

I think the pipe tucked up on the driver side was missed.
Looks like I need to go south of the border to find my muscle cars.

I see the one on the drivers side. What’s hanging down looks more like a bar of some sort than a pipe. But hey! Could just be my eyes.
Still suspicious it’s a true R/T without the ralleye dash.

Please point out what you suspect is wrong/missing on that dash. I’ve got a 69 CHARGER R/T and looks darn near exactly the same. E bodies & B bodies, albeit had some similar features, were not identical.

I think the pipe tucked up on the driver side was missed. Bad leather fading on the driver side seat back, but no cracked dash? Did I miss something?
Looks like I need to go south of the border to find my muscle cars.

Cool car. I’m glad it made it out of Venezuela before it imploded.

A friend in Australia says you can always tell which American muscle cars were imported new, they came loaded. The people that bought them new were wealthy, if they were going to go to the trouble of buying and shipping the car from a US dealer they loaded them up with options.

That most certainly IS a Rally dash. It has the Tic Toc Tach and fully instrumentation. Standard R/T package. Why do you think it doesn’t? 1970 E body, Challenger and ‘Cuda, used a different style Rally dash.

I would just fix all the mechanical’s on this car and drive it as is,.. no need for another rotisserie restoration to hide in someones garage,.. this car needs to be driven as a daily driver…

I was with you until the very end. Driven regularly, yes. Daily driver, why?

In Venezuela you can fill the tank for about 30 cents, so who cares about MPGs. But you might get murdered on the way to the gas station.

I see A. Automatic console. B. Power DISC brakes (wheel covers specific).
    C. Power windows. D. Vinyl top E. Power steering. F. Unique color (maybe an owner repaint)….this will be displayed at MCACN as a barn find before it goes to MECUM. Nice options for Hemi car, but not over the top loaded. It will sell well.

This Charger does not look like a 15k mile car. This was driven very hard and put away wet!

From the looks of it I’d say the miles/odometer is not consistent with the condition. Either that or it was a hard 15k!

Have you driven a 68 Hemi Charger ? 30 second full pedal stickers were posted somewhere. Most hemi cars were driven very hard.

It’s quite possible the odometer has rolled over and the mileage is actually 123K kilometres. That’s still not a whole lot of mileage for a used car here in Canada.
