Third Time Lucky: 1962 MGA Mark II

1962-mga-mkii

Discovering a barn find is an exciting experience. Unfortunately, many people loose steam after that initial rush wears off. The car then starts the process over. This 1962 MGA is one of those cars. It was pulled out of long term storage, sold, and is now on the market once again. Hopefully the next owner will be able muster enough enthusiasm to get the job done. It was last of the MGAs so it came with disc brakes and the largest engine offered. It wasn’t as good as a twin-cam, but it was close and lot cheaper to run. In other words, it deserves to be saved. It can be found here on eBay where bidding is at $510 with no reserve.

Yup!, this is a real Mark II, dash trim correct, and should be a 1622 engine, BUT it sure has spent time somewhere else than Texas, maybe in New England states??. I build these as a retirement business and this one is nearly a parts car. The front sheet metal, fenders are beyond the capability of anyone other than a GOOD bodyman. Although the rocker areas look ok, the inner frame rails tell me that this one sat outside with wet floorboards for a long time. Wet wood really attacks the frame and attaching braces for the floors. The trunk also suffers from rain intrusion via the probably non-existing weatherstripping around the trunk that flooded the floor until rust thru. Too bad, their nice cars for nice weather. I’ve got a mate to this one and one in triple black in stock currently.

Agree with Bernie—it’s probably a parts car, likely because it spent a significant part of its life in a snowy/salty region. It’s too rusty to have lived its life in Arizona and California.

Too bad. It’s a late 1622 cc car and should be saved, but the resto would probably cost more than it will be worth when it’s done. So, unless someone wants to come up with lots of $$ to save a last-year MGA, there are two options: parts car, or hold it until values rise enough to justify the resto cost, but that might take a while.

There was a red ’62 on ebay a couple of weeks ago that was perfect. Since it was in town I went to look as I knew the seller. When I write perfect I mean, frame off, matching everything.
    It was darn near perfect.
Sold………..If I remember correctly is was just under 30K…………
