Time Capsule: 1972 International Harvester Scout

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Located in Vashon, Washington, this 1972 International Harvester Scout II has survived intact for 48 years. It is listed here on eBay with four days remaining in the auction. The current auction price is $5,601. The Scout II was introduced in late 1971 as the successor to the Scout 800B which was only produced for 8 months and varied little from the 800A.

The interior for this Scout shows the improvement over prior years which were more spartan. The driver seat is worn through in both the lower and upper portion of the bench seat. The tan dash is equipped with fuel, temperature, oil and volt gauges, and a floor-mounted shifter for the automatic transmission. There is some rust in the lower portions of the quarters and the driver fender. The floorboards are said to be solid.

The original paint looks pretty good all things considered. The seller states that there is no Bondo or bodywork and that the Scout II has new tires on its factory chrome wheels. The Scout is equipped with the 304 cubic inch V8 engine which was rated at 196 horsepower (gross) from the factory. The brakes are said to need work and the engine smokes a little. The seller notes that there is a problem with the freeze plug so that the Scout cannot be driven for an extended period of time.

The primary difference to tell an early Scout II is the three horizontal bars in the front grill. This is a handsome vehicle that, with a little engine work, would be a fun weekend vehicle. So if you like a time capsule, this 1972 International Scout II might be worth a closer look before the auction ends. I would expect the bid price to at least double before the auction ends.

Too bad it’s RWD, it would make a great beach buggy.

Bid price won’t double since it’s 2WD. Someone will turn this truck into 4WD. It looks like it’s got good bones for the mods.
