39k Mile Survivor: 1987 Chevrolet 1500 4WD

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Sometimes it is amazing what pops up on eBay. Here is a 1987 Chevrolet 4WD short wheelbase step side pickup that is located in the dry climate of Glendale, Arizona, just outside of Phoenix. The truck is black with a dark red interior. It was ordered with the Custom Deluxe package and has traveled only 38,942 miles. The truck is being auctioned to the highest bidder here on eBay. The auction has 4 days remaining and has been bid to $25,101 already. The seller states in the comments that he or she is open to offers. With the interest in these trucks, it may not make it to the last day of the auction before someone drops a pile of money in the seller’s lap.

The red interior looks mint and all original. The truck is equipped with power brakes, power steering, cruise control, tilt wheel, AM/FM Stereo cassette, air conditioning, and a sliding rear window. I guess you had to upgrade to the Silverado edition to get power windows and power locks. The glass all the way around looks good and is tinted. The dash pad is showing the effect of the Arizona sun and is separating and has some small cracks. I believe there are aftermarket replacements that are available to replace the dash pad.

The truck is equipped with a 350 cubic inch V8 engine backed by a four-speed manual transmission. This truck represents that last year of the square body and was the only GM truck from 1973-1987 to be equipped with throttle body fuel injection. The seller discloses that the truck runs and drives well. The four-wheel drive works and everything shifts properly. The lights and gauges all work except for the stereo is intermittent and the air conditioning does not blow cold.

Chevrolet changed the designation of its 4WD from K10 to V10 in 1987. The truck was purchased new in 1987 by Thomas and Janice Hancock to haul feed and hay around their small chicken farm. The seller states that the truck got limited use during its life and hence the low miles. This truck comes with a lot of original paperwork and looks to be a time capsule.

Well, plan on doing a brake fluid flush at some point. Apparently the owner never did… Nice truck though, reminds me of the truck in Red Dawn. And you don’t see manuals too often…

Yes, Chevy & GMC changed the designation *on the old body trucks* to R/V. The *new* body took over the C/K designation, both trucks being built in 1/2 ton that year. R/V also lived on in the 3/4 & larger trucks, plus the Suburban.
THEN, in 2000, the C/K was built alongside the new Silverado bodied trucks, however, the old C/K bodies kept a “Silverado” trim package. Confused yet? Try being a parts guy through all this with people you couldn’t explain the differences to. Don’t even get me started on *Classics* and *Limiteds*, Sierra and Ciera, etc.
Anyway, rant over. Looks like a pretty nice truck. Not 25K nice, but nice nonetheless. GLWTS.

Bid up to 29,600 already or buy it now for 37,500. Wow. It’s certainly gorgeous and in time capsule shape. Step side and a manual also, but I can’t believe the money this is bringing. I’m not really educated on current values, but it’s a fairly basic truck (which is part of its appeal) I guess. GLWTA

That truck has every option I would want in a square body. It looks good but I can’t tell from the blurry %#$* pictures.

And he appears to part of the “bubble” that will sell such items to those “fools” that will spend way more than such items are worth in order to acquire the items and so now he will sell this truck at a high “bubble” price as well which will allow him to buy more items to sell at “bubble” prices for fools who spend their money at higher prices. For now the rest of us financially savvy and prudent folk sit back and wait for the bursting of that “bubble” and when it does then we will be able to buy using pennies on the dollar. Happens in EVERY collectible and hobby market…It will happen in ours as well for those that wait. As it was once said: Wise men say…Only fools rush in.

We will be dead or in wheel chairs , to old to care before the car bubble pops. Cars will hold prices for many, many years. I’m 61 and all I’ve seen is prices go higher and higher. Every car that I like has climbed out of my reach and don’t see an end in my lifetime! It’s not a fad!

Steve, in general it’s people sitting on the sidelines and have no interest in a particular car/truck are the most vocal about prices they deem “too high”. The one thing I’ve found they have common, when it’s time for them to sell, they go straight to the top and ask prices that would make sellers like this shake their head in disbelief.

Very nice truck, I’ve had a black ’76 Fleetside short box and two black Suburbans, all ordered new. The last Suburban in 1990 was loaded, and I paid $20,400 out the door and sold it 5 years later with 50,000 miles for $19,500! I traded my ’76 short box in 1978 for a completely restored black 1956 Ford Big Window pickup, which I unfortunately had to sell for the down payment on my first new house. I never should have let that one go, it was so nice but it did get me into a new house. These trucks were the coolest thing out there in that era so you can see why a cherry like this is bringing top dollar!

I’ve been hearing about the “bubble” in old cars for 25 years and its never burst yet! It has peaks and valleys in the high end Barrett-Jackson stuff, but as a whole it keeps on climbing. Everyone thought with us aging baby boomers selling cars and big collections coming up for auction would knock down prices but it didn’t. I thought the Covid pandemic would make a dent in it, but it has climbed even faster in the past year. It always seems to keep pace with inflation or better. I bought my old cars because I love them, not as an investment anyway. Low mileage originals always bring top dollar, especially trucks lately. They’ll be throwing dirt on you if you are waiting for bargains!

Why are you criticizing a guys clean, neat and orderly garage, calling it “clutter”, because it looks pretty nice to me with the period perfect Mopar posters and memorabilia, and even a restored Bennett gas pump. If you think that’s bad, you had better look at my “clutter”! I love the stuff!

After owning three of the Square bodies (the Third Generation) and three of the next series, I liked the next series (the Fourth Generation) better with their much improved all around quality, especially in the bodies and interiors. Here’s a 1995 that looks pretty nice.

“limited use” eventho awfully dark pic – I would say ‘no use” (no in bed pic) but this 1 never even went out in the rain… (do they have rain in AZ?). Last’o da Bull nose (is that the chebby lingo?).

Just the model I’d seek too – short bed, step side, creeper/granny 1st (not sure the chebby- 4 or 6:1?), wish it hada OD on top…
    MSRP in the day?
    Got 50K$ for it today?
That’s where an auction will take it…
    Nice find Bruce~

I knew a person who had the same setup but… With a straight 6 and dual stacks exhaust. The 4 speed has a granny low and would climb steep hills (dirt) never get stuck in snow. I can’t believe the price for this. The only thing I would do is put dual flow master exhaust on it…. Whoever wins the bid will enjoy this truck a lot. 🐻🇺🇸

I bought a truck identical (step/black/stick/4wd and throttle body) new in 1987. Took wife, one kid in car seat, one not, and a dog from NM to Yellowstone. Shell camper and 24 ft bumper pull camper. It was a great puller, just a bit tight in the cab. Next trip to glacier park traded up to an extended F250.
Pics bring back good memories. Good on fuel, strong, snug inside! Probably paid the same price for it new as now.

With all the Mopar memorabilia (some of which I’d LOVE to have), I keep looking for the Mopar in his garage, LOL!! :-)

With truck prices like they are today, 37.5k is pretty much chump change for a 4wd Chevy with 38k miles lol.
