Triple (Black) Treat: 1977 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Triple black. Is there a more intimidating factory color combination than that? This triple black Monte Carlo is for sale here on eBay. Located in Minden, Louisiana, it comes with a clear title. With 5 days remaining on the auction and there are currently no bids.

Once again this is a seller that I have full respect for. They are totally candid about this Chev. The car is fairly straight. Black paint will definitely show any bumps, ripples or bubbles. This one looks reasonably straight and true, with only a few minor blemishes. However, the owner does state that the paintwork is not perfect and that it is showing some fading. The vinyl top is also starting to look a bit faded as well.

The interior presents quite well. Unfortunately, there are no shots of the top of the dash so we can’t be certain that there are no cracks there. The seller states that it has air con and tilting wheel. Air con could be a real blessing on a hot Summer’s day with all that black.

I’m not sure if it’s my imagination: either the engine looks small or the engine bay looks huge. That 305ci V8 looks almost lost in there. The car now sports new tires, brakes, battery, muffler, alternator & water pump. It has a claimed 68,000 miles on the clock which is low for a car of this age, but there seems to be more corrosion on the engine and some of the ancillaries than I would expect on a car of that mileage.

Once again this is a car that has a wide variation on price when you look at equivalent cars on the market. The seller has set the opening bid at $7,500. With prices varying from $3,200 for one in average condition (not triple black) to $13,500 for a pristine one, I can’t help but think that maybe this seller is aiming too high. Then again, when it comes to prices I don’t mind being wrong.

One of my all time favorite cars, the last year of the good ones, this is definitely a car I’d buy. Price is hard to determine on a car like this, If you bought a rust bucket and restored it you’d be in way deeper than $7500.00 to get to this level. So maybe this is a far price. The milage isn’t to high and it doesn’t need much. This looks like it is ready to enjoy.

Not really unfairly priced unless there’s something the owner is hiding. Looks like a really nice car to me. There’s so few of these left because they were great Enduro cars.

That is one huge engine bay clearly enough room for a big block my uncle had one these when I was teenager. I couldn’t believe how small the that engine looked in there.and then the shroud was almost foot and half long cause the motor sat so far back

      I had a ’74 with a 454. Miss that Monte!

Had a ’77 Landau, very similarly equipped to this. Nice car, and they’re pretty. Very much crosswind-guided, so they need constant steering correction on windy days. Speaking of wind, you’ll hear plenty of it thanks to those god-awful window seals. Never met a colonade that didn’t need a brake booster, may as well stop at the parts house on your way back from getting this one and stock up. AS for the 305 2 BBL, remember this has the lousy valve seals so it’ll be an oil burner if not already. And as for performance…. well, lets just say i was dusted on the highway one night by a V6 Plymouth Voyager.

A two door GM colonade was the best selling car in the US in 1977. It rightfully wasn’t the Chevy. But… they’re pretty to look at :)

(grab an Olds with a 350/4, or a GP with the 400…better cars IMO)

I had the same car in light metallic blue. It was one of the best cars I ever owned. 305 2v 350 auto. It rode and drove excellent. Mine had about the same options as this one. I have the money but, I don’t have the room or the need for another car that will be sitting most of the time. I’m sure, one of these days, I may be sorry I passed on this one.

Had a 74 black/black Monte. 454, sunroof, swivel buckets, gauge package, AmFm 8 track (!). Put 15×8 Corvette Rally’s with BFG radials on it. Loved that car, but traded it for an original 66 396 4spd ElCamino in about 1980. Wish I still had both of them!

I bought 77 Monte for ex wife on Valentine’s day…when the “new” ones came out in 78 she liked them better so I traded in for the 78…one of the reasons she’s my ex!! Still regret it!

When the 2nd generation Monte came out in ’73, STD motor was the 350, 454 optional. The 305 wasn’t offered until ’75 or so; thus, that huge engine bay. The Monte Carlo S was a game-changer, with its Radial Tuned Suspension. This was the first mid-size American car that actually HANDLED. You can thank John Delorean for that.

Bought a 76 Monte Landau, midnight blue metallic, white landau roof with white vinyl swivel bucket interior. Beautiful car, however, the 305 was junk. Kept it for only 5 – 6 months and ordered a new 77 Olds Cutlass Supreme Brougham, black on black, no vinyl roof, 350 4V. The olds was a much better car all the way around.

I would like it much more if it had bucket seats and a few power options. However, it looks to be in good “original” condition. A nice car that seems appropriately priced to me!

I had a 76 with the swivel buckets, console and 350 ci engine. Had it for over 10 years and sold it to a friend with over 200K on it still ran like a charm. Loved cruising in that vessel with that long front end. Wish I still had it.

Editors, please stop using Air con as an abbreviation. Either use A/C, or don’t be lazy and spell out air conditioning. It grinds my nerves reading it here, and this car is the second time I saw it today. Thanks.

The Monte Carlo was a beautiful car in its first iteration and the first year of the second (1973). After that the grille got ugly, the bumpers got ugly, the car looked blocky and clumsy, and the smog laws murdered the power. From ’74 on and through the following redesigns, the Monte Carlo is just a fail.

My cousin had a beautiful all-silver 73 with a 454, and I recall seeing another with a factory 4 speed – saw it many times in the parking lot of a place I frequented – and those were interesting, beautiful cars. Not this egg-grate though.
