True Boogie Van: 1976 Ford E100

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

We’ve started to see an uptick in old-school vans appearing on auction sites and bringing a surprising amount of money. It’s not surprising, as genuine boogie vans are loaded with period style and swagger and generally get a thumbs-up no matter where it goes. This 1976 Ford E100 van retains awesome period decals and the seller has added some very period-correct accessories to convert it into a true boogie van. He claims to have driven it from Arizona to Texas following an engine replacement, which resulted in a fresh crate 351 being dropped into the short-wheelbase chassis. The Ford supposedly benefits from around $10,000 in maintenance and is now up for grabs here on eBay with bids to $4,600 and no reserve.

The wide rear wheels and tires give this van a great stance, but the seller notes the sliding doors will need extenders in order to clear the bolder fitment. The seller added those staggered rollers along with the rear window louvers, a cheesy roof spoiler, and the sun visor over the front glass. It’s all in good fun and easily reversible if you don’t like it, and if it were mine, I’d delete the spoiler and leave everything else intact. As you can see below the bumper he has also added a hitch and claims that the E100 was able to tow an Airstream across town without any issues. While it still looks good in photos, the seller claims it would benefit from a full paint job; fortunately, it is not rusty.

The van is a blank canvas at the moment, which is exactly how you want to come into owning one of these if your budget only allows for a project. Now, you can spend some real cash and buy one that’s completely finished and kitted out with furniture and carpeting, or you can buy a rot-free example that’s ready for your personal touch. Really, from a time and labor standpoint, the last thing you want to do is buy a project boogie van that’s filled with funk from years of partying and poor hygiene. The seller confirms that in addition to the crate engine, he has installed a new parking brake, right front hub, master cylinder, and numerous other components.

That being said, there’s still plenty of work to be done. The seller notes the dash will need some work (which you can see better in some of the other photos) and that you’ll obviously need to finish all of the cabin areas, not just the living quarters. The front seats are standard fixed buckets with lap belts; the seller will include swivel seats and the equipment needed to convert it to shoulder belts. The Ford E100 is an excellent choice for a period-correct boulevard cruiser, especially if you add some of the additional accessories the seller is including, like the side pipes mufflers, fender flares, and a front chin spoiler. With great graphics and no rust, this is the blank canvas to buy if you’re hankering for a classic boogie van build.

The E100, being the lightest van, can have a 300 cu. inch six, a 302 V8 or a 351Windsor V8 in that year. You got either a 3-speed stick or an FMF 3 speed auto.

I bought one of these brand new in ’76, NR 50s in the rear end LR 50s, T/A s. 2 tone silver and black, moulded the flares, front and rear roll pan, lund visor, sunroof, and oak running brds. Worked in a van shop, the interior was red crushed velvet about 3″ deep with black diamond tuck buttons. Had a fake mylar mirror on the ceiling and a wrought iron oval to crawl the to the bed. Mood lighting in wood beams in the ceiling corners and then the all important red and black shag carpet. A lot of wise fathers would not let their daughters get in it, when I showed up to pick them up !! Man those were good times, damn good thing those old vans can’t talk. I remember I paid about 3800.00 for the bare van at the ford dealer, brand new.

Both the steering wheel and the roof spoiler have to go. This does have the desirable 351 Windsor motor!

LOL! Sorry, I see that title and think of Weird Al Yankovic’s song “Gotta Boogie”.
