Turbo Notchback Project: 1993 Ford Mustang LX

It’s difficult to part with a project car, especially after holding onto it for so many years in hopes of putting it back together. The seller of this notchback Fox body Mustang had built himself quite a hot rod over the years, and because of the upgrades it received, he eventually torched the engine and was forced to set the car aside. These days, it has been gathering dust in storage where it’s been in pieces, and the seller is finally conceding that it’s time to let it go. The 1993 Ford Mustang LX is listed here on craigslist with a 5.0L V8 that was turbocharged before the bottom end blew up.

The listing features mix of historical photos and the current condition. The Mustang certainly appeared to be an intimidating presence on the roads back in the day, with what looks like a staggered wheel and tire setup, a cowl induction hood, and tinted windows. The notchback body design is one of the more sought-after Fox body arrangements, and these days a car in stock condition with a manual transmission can fetch very real money. This particular Mustang is a factory manual car, but the seller was in the process of converting it to an automatic.

The seller notes that the Dana Sniff built C4 transmission is mounted but I don’t believe it is hooked up; that’s how I infer the listing, at least. The interior appears to be in decent shape, but the overall description speaks to that of a tired car. The seller notes it will need a paint job to shine again, and that the hood flew open at some point in the past, damaging the cowl. While it’s impossible to tell much from these photos, it is encouraging to see that the cabin remains in largely stock condition. The listing notes that the bulk of the upgrades have been contained to the engine compartment, so perhaps that’s why we don’t see modifications elsewhere in the car.

The seller claims this Mustang was making “…..500hp/550tq to wheels on a pump gas tune when was running,” which seems like a very nice bump in performance over the stock horsepower figures. The Mustang will come with Diablosport software, a TREMEC 3550 26 spline, a
Fox Lake ported Holley systemax intake and TB, AFR 165 heads, DnD K-member, and Caster camber plates. He also notes he has a DSS short block with forged internals that he’ll throw into the deal. Overall, this looks like a good entry point to a reasonable project that can either remain modified or be put back to stock condition. Which path would you choose? I’d wanna keep goin on that lista goodies (suspension, break, etc) but there’s sompin 2B said for these fox-bodied right now. That buyin cohort is (has been) comin in now, fora while. Muscle has been slowly goin out (such an era may B never quiet down completely).
Everything is out there (typical vendors) for complete mods’n rest0. I passed- thru several but most R just too far for me – all opposite ends, closest 1,500mi. The 30 to 45somethings seem to go for them~

Ok this is a nice fox body project. So the hopes of going back original are out the window. Now you can make it yours street car or race car what ever you want. Me personally I would build a 5.0 with some hp parts and have it street able. Then I would install a 5 speed back in it and drive and enjoy it. To the seller GLWTS. To the buyer make it the way you want it and drive and enjoy it

I moved a basket case 51 MGTD 5 times since I bought it in 1990 till I gave it away in 2022. Don’t take a car apart until you are ready to finish within 6 months, or you lose bigly.

That’s why we turbocharge Buick’s and not Ford’s!
