Two For One: 1975 and 1978 Pontiac Firebirds

Pat L. found an interesting combo of cars that are for sale in South Lake Tahoe, California. One car is a 1978 Pontiac Firebird and the other is a 1975 Pontiac Firebird. The cars were listed for sale 3 days ago here on Craigslist. The combined asking price of the two cars is $4,000. Both cars are in project condition. As shown above, the 1978 Firebird has a Trans Am hood on the car. In 1975, there were 22,293 Firebirds produced and Pontiac built 32,672 Firebirds in 1978.

The Craigslist ad states that the two cars come with one engine. It is a Pontiac 400 cubic inch V8 short block and a 4 speed transmission. The cars will also come with new front coil springs and new rear leaf springs that are designed to lower the car. New brake parts including rotors, pads and suspension bushings are also included. Pictures of these parts are in the ad. A gasket set and heads for the engine are included but the new owner will need to select a cam for the engine rebuild.

This picture of the 1975 Firebird looks like a glacier is slowly eating the car! While this car is reported to be a base Firebird, it is currently equipped with a factory fiberglass Formula hood. This car has a current registration and clean title. The seller stated that he planned to switch the VIN from the 1975 Firebird to the 1978 Firebird along with one of the doors. I don’t think this is legal but that is what his plans were.

The 1978 Firebird is sitting high since the rear end was dropped at some point. The pictures indicate that the car has the transverse mounted muffler system and dual chrome exhaust tips as found on a production Trans Am. Pontiac produced multiple models of the Firebird including the Esprit, Formula and Trans Am that were upgrades from the base Firebird. These cars will like be bought and parted out because they are not worth as much restored as other models. I hope that is not the case.

Sell the ’78 for parts, build the ’75 with a 400/4speed. Looks like junk but for 3-4K maybe ok…

More wasted and let it rot metal. What are these people thinking maybe realizing they should make an attempt to store, house or cover your projects if not going to get to in awhile. I get disgusted when I see these vintage vehicles go to waste especially in these elements.

From the looks off both, seems as if both were run into the ground & started salvaging parts off them for other vehicles.

Getting them on a trailer or roll-back would be a job in itself! I wonder what 4-speed trans comes with them? An engine/trans picture would have been nice.
