Two Owner: 1969 GMC 1500 Camper

With 3 days remaining in the auction, this 1969 GMC Sierra 1500 is listed here on eBay and appears to be in survivor condition. The truck is located in Fort Harrison, Montana, and is said to be a barn find with only two owners. The GMC Sierra 1/2 ton pick up is a two-wheel-drive model that has spent its life in the Western United States. The truck is currently bid to $3,150 and there does not appear to be a reserve on the vehicle. The odometer reports that the truck has traveled about 140,000 miles over its 52-year life.

The brown and gold interior presents well and looks stock except for the steering wheel wrap and radio. The truck was reportedly purchased at Grimes Buick/GMC in Helena, Montana on August 27, 1969 by a cabinet maker that is still in business today. In 1971, the truck was sold to a local gas station owner who passed it on to their kids and has since passed away also. The seller believes that gauges, interior lights, heater, and radio all work with the exception of the fuel gauge. The glass all looks good but the ad reports that the driver window is hard to roll down. The truck comes with the original keys.

The truck is equipped with its original 307 cubic inch V8 engine. The WH code motor was rated at 200 gross horsepower from the factory. The truck is said to start up and run fine. It has good oil pressure and vacuum with no noise from the engine and just a puff of smoke upon startup. This could be due to old valve seals if the smoke is white or a rich carburetor setting if the smoke is darker. The automatic transmission is said to shift fine. As can be seen, there is plenty of room in the engine compartment to work and service the engine. An aftermarket air cleaner adorns the carburetor and it appears the valve covers were painted in the last 5 years when new gaskets were put on.

The original gold paint is faded but it presentable. The hood is not original since it was replaced after being damaged at the service station. There is rust in the rocker panels, cab, and floorboards but not behind the wheels. The rear camper cab looks to have protected the bed over its lifetime and the wood looks original. The seller knew the long-time owners of the truck their whole life and grew up with them so there is a lot of good detail about the history of the truck. This long-wheelbase truck has great lines and looks to be a survivor that needs just a little attention to keep it a survivor.

Cool old truck, love everything about it. Refreshing to see no reserve in a sea of ridiculously expensive 67-72 GM trucks. Very affordable way to scratch that nostalgia itch. It’d look great in the lineup for morning coffee down at our local feed store and Co-op. -20 here right now in Marlboro country, this truck would probably start right up.

It would make a good shop truck, but it’s not really anything that special, just an old family pickup. If it was a short bed, then I might be inclined to look a little bit closer, but then it’s already been priced out of a reasonable range to go for.

Good staring point for your own version of Farm truck.

I once owned a truck just like this with a few exceptions. Mine was green and was three speed manual changed from column to floor shift. When the 307 went bad I purchased a 74 Olds cutlass with a good 350 and automatic. I put the engine from the Olds in the truck kept the three speed manual, switched the worn out bench seat for the red velvet buckets from the Olds and drove the beast for another 200,000 miles.
I’d love to get this truck, but as my wife has pointed out I have absolutely no use for a pickup.

What Chevy small block from this era doesn’t blow a little smoke on a cold start? It’s the nature of the beast.

The seat appears to be out of a late 70’s GM pickup. It doesn’t have the right overall shape or cover pattern to be an original seat. I hole potential buyers don’t overlook the fact that the ad mentions that quite a bit of rust repair will be required.
