Two-Tone 1981 Mercedes Benz 300TD

Mercedes diesel wagons are just about as cool as they get. Mercedes Benz introduced the W123 in 1976. It was offered as a 2-door sedan or a coupe. In ’78, the company introduced the wagon platform, which was extremely popular. The example at hand is said to have 180k miles and is listed for sale on Facebook in Cumberland Center, Maine for $4000. Thanks to Bruce M for the tip!

The exterior is finished in an olive green and white two-tone paint. The paint is likely not original but is a very neat choice. The paint appears okay, there is some rust present throughout that could be remedied. The car is also equipped with a roof rack to carry all the extras on a road trip. The tires seem to be newer and the wheels are in decent condition.

The interior is finished in khaki leather. The seller has installed seat covers, but the original seats appear to have some cracks and wear. The dash and steering wheel are in good condition. The rear-facing third-row seats appear to have been deleted. The cabin needs some attention if it is to be put back to its prime. The cars are made to be luxurious in a German fashion, comfortable and effective but nothing too over-the-top.

A 3L 4-cylinder diesel engine sends 123 horsepower to the wheels via a 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine bay looks clean and the car is said to run and drive well. The seller notes that the car has been slightly lifted because heavier springs were installed. The seller installed heavy-duty Bilstein shocks and General Grabbers. They also replaced the injectors with Bosch, added new glow plugs, replaced the oil cooler and lines, installed new brakes, and added a skid plate, a 3″ straight exhaust, and a windshield. The car comes with extra parts including rebuilt Mercedes axles, front rotors, a power steering pump, wheel bearings, brake pads, filters, and gaskets. If you want to take on a running project contact the seller on Facebook before this beauty is sold.

I googled “hooptie” and found a photo of this car. I’m surprised Mercedes hasn’t confiscated the 3-pointed star emblems.

Wouldn’t it be nice if all the authors would take 15 minutes and learn a little about the cars they’re writing about? With all the information in the world at our fingertips, there’s really no excuse for getting so many things wrong. I won’t even submit a comment without making sure I have the details correct.

I’ve owned several 123 cars and they are great cars. However, have a look at the second picture in the MarketPlace ad and run away! That’s no casual fix. The rocket panel is completely rusted away. The bottom of the tailgate is rusted away and patched with tread plate. If those places are that bad imagine the rest of the car.

Great looking car. Always had a soft spot for these. While rust is present, judging by the underneath photos, I believe this is a fairly simple repair to bring it up to snuff. If it were closer to the PNW, I would consider checking it out for things that may have been missed in the photos. Like it for the asking price.

This is not a 300 TD, but a 300 TDT. The first T stay for wagon (touring), the D for Diesel, and the last T for Turbo. Until 1981, you only got TD, but from 1981 to 85 you got the TDT 5 sylinder bouth. The turbo version was only availible with automatic
