Unusual Czech Scooter: 1960 Čezeta

c5

This unusually shaped scooter hails from what is now the Czech Republic. The large front “fender” actually contains not only the headlight, but the fuel tank, leaving the area under the seat for storage. They were manufactured originally from 1957 to about 1964. I also don’t remember ever seeing a spare tire on a scooter, but I don’t claim to be an expert. This particular one is located in San Diego, California, and is being offered here on eBay, where the buy-it-now is a steep $6,000 but lower bids are requested. Thanks to Barn Finds reader Jim S. for this really cool find! The scooter is running, and while the original paint shows some marks, I think I’d judiciously clean it up and ride. I have no idea if this is a good value–can some of our readers help with this one?

I knew I saw this somewhere before. The TV show, “American Restoration” featured a scooter like this. Actually, many scooters had spare tires. They were either located under the left rear side cover, in front of the driver, under the handle bars, or mounted on the back, above the tail light. Quite a novel idea.

Question. Why do some of my comments require moderation. Who’d I piss off?

Hope the guy sells it. I have one residing in my shed with the motor and tranny miss. Waiting for DHL to deliver the motor and transmission that I purchased in Germany. Interesting in that the nickname for the scooter is “the pig”. Paid $750 for mine missing the motor and tranny.

This is way too much. I have two and paid 4,000.00 for the pair.

I see this one for sale on ebay, and this pair, which currently have a lower entry point: https://archive.is/zzHPl / http://www.ebay.com/itm/Other-Makes-/181872840648?forcerrptr=true&hash=item2a58774fc8&item=181872840648

Gas tank upfront? A Czech version of Ford Pinto….

More like a Model A. Get that gas tank up in front of you so you can keep an eye on it during a crash.

Only one word response to the gas tank up front: “BOOM!” as the gas tank explodes upon contact with a car, truck, wall, etc……….

Everyone needs to stop watching TV! Gas tanks do not explode, basically EVER.

But they do leak, especially when punctured at impact. The strategic placement here right behind the headlight with strong possibility of electric spark is just enough reason for me to ride this thing in reverse ;)

I guess you have never come upon an automobile accident where the car(s) were on fire! Seen several of these over the years in Houston!

Saw one yesterday at the Vintage Bike Rally in Venice, Ca. The filler cap is right above the headlamp. I wonder what would happen if gas went spilling over hot headlamp or having to endure a front end impact?? And here I thought everything Czech was very thoroughly engineered.

I had one many years ago, great thing.
Just fill the tank with the same foam we put in all rally race cars, or, don’t crash!

Stumbled on this thread while looking for oddball scoots (who wants a Vespa?) by Googling Cezeta scooter. Just bought the two referenced by Packrat for FAR less, and one is complete. Amazingly, just a 25 minute drive away. Both are in pretty incredible shape with no rust or dents… restoration to commence immediately. Still looking for a decent Zundapp Bella.
