Unwanted Inheritance: 1973 Chevy Nova

When I think about potentially inheriting a vehicle, it’s a thought that’s punctuated by two heavy doses of reality: it may be a car I don’t want, and I may be forced to sell it on, despite the likely feelings of sentimental obligations. Now, if said vehicle is right up my alley, heck yeah – free project car! But it doesn’t always turn out that way. This 1973 Chevy Nova here on eBay is a car the seller inherited, and now has for sale with a $3,000 Buy-It-Now.

The originality of the Nova comes through, with the engine badges still affixed, chrome trim rings attached to the wheels, and original steelies still bolted to the axles. The paint is tired and there are traces of rust in multiple spots, potentially worrisome given the car’s northeastern location. Still, at least the paint appears to be evenly faded.

The interior appears to bear the scars of long periods of sun exposure; however, Staten Island isn’t exactly a place you’d associate with the unrelenting dry heat of a desert sky. The listing provides very little information about the Nova or its history, other than to say the engine turns over. Mileage is indicated at being a tick over 81,000.

The engine bay photos don’t tell us much, other than it looks relatively un-messed with. Always good to see the air cleaner still attached, but it’s hard to tell if any mice have taken up residence inside. A Nova isn’t the most collectible car out there, but the background of the eBay photos show the seller’s relative had many other vehicles to choose from. Buy this one or wait to see what else gets listed – that’s the question.

“I inherited these cars, they are being sold as is. I had the engine turn over.”

    Wow, way to oversell something!

A little over ambitious on the price too.

In my area scrap cars bring about $200. This looks like it’s worth a little more.

Somebody submitted a bid earlier this afternoon (Thursday, September 20) for $2,000!! He or she must want this old Nova real bad.

Interesting that it has factory AC and power brakes. As long as it’s not hopelessly rotted underneath, someone will but it. I just hope they restore it and enjoy it for what it is, instead of turning it into yet another silly, tubbed hot rod.

This could be saved but a “no go” on listing the possibilities

3k seems about right for a 2 door Nova. The popularity of this model make this a good candidate for restomodding. I think the market will speak highly for this car.

Sitting on grass, unmoved for an untold number of years in a NY climate doesn’t leave much hope for the frame being anything close to solid. $3K is a bit overly optimistic. Take the sentiment out of the asking price, and you’ll have the car sold quickly

See now what I really need to do is talk my elderly relatives into buying my dream cars for ME to inherit! My uncle the Ford engineer should get a 67-68 cougar, the Chrysler bigshot uncle a hemi Cuda and the GM engineer uncle really needs a 1960 Buick Invicta.

The posting doesn’t say it sat on that particular swath of grass all these years. But there are other factors that play into the potential for tin worm including salted roads in/around Staten Island. I like these years before the Coke-bottle shape went away completely. Drove my bosses 73 with AC but otherwise a poverty version as a delivery boy for his medical supply company. It had the hatch which was also very handy.

Wow, what’s going on with that driver’s side door sill plate? From the photo it looks like some pirate dragged his leg across the rockers and into the car every day it was driven. Paint fade is odd, almost as if a repair was done around the rear window and blended into the fenders and it faded at a different rate. $1500 all in, only if the car can stay running and drive somewhat.

Jeff, I’d be a player at $500.00 but I’m too far away.

When you click on the eBay link in the Barnfinds description, it now takes you to this very nice bare-bones 1973 Nova. It’s a much better example, although it does have a straight 6 but the condition is amazing:

Oh yeah, the original Barnfinds Nova from this posting sold for $2376. Why, I don’t know.

One dollar more than $2375, that’s why. That’s how some auctions work.
