Upgraded! 1972 Chevrolet Cheyenne 400CID V8 4X4

Here on eBay is a 1972 Chevrolet Cheyenne 4×4 pickup, bid to $20,100 with reserve met. This fetching example has seen several upgrades as well as a cosmetic restoration including new paint and interior. Chevrolet introduced its C/K series in 1960; its success saw it run through 2002 in one form or another. This truck belongs to the second-generation “Action Line” and it sports the Cheyenne trim, including special vinyl upholstery and carpet, rather than rubber mats. The seller has had the Cheyenne for five years and claims it has no filler, no rust, was never in an accident and is very straight. Let’s unpack its additional advantages.

The seller indicates the original motor was a 350 CID V8 and the VIN reminds us that this is a K10 – the half-ton 4×4. In the early 2000s, the motor was replaced with a 400 V8 rated at about 250 hp in the day, and the automatic transmission was rebuilt. It has dual gas tanks, which the buyer will appreciate given the thirsty nature of these older V8s. The tires are new (no small investment these days). The underside is straight as a pin. The C/K series was developed with a dropped ladder frame to bring the cab closer to the ground, and the rear axle was augmented with coil springs.

In addition to the easier ingress thanks to the new frame, Chevy made sure the C/K cabin was more car-like. This interior is as tidy as they come, with slight wear but virtually no serious flaws. The dash is clean and uncracked, though very slightly warped. Even the door seals look good. The truck is equipped with air conditioning which works, as does the radio. The lights and gauges are all in good order too. The equipment tag is still in the glove box, and readable!

The wooden bed is in excellent shape. The sliding rear window is a great option (though make sure it’s closed when you haul hay or it’ll blow all over the cabin!) Many of these trucks have seen modern mechanical transplants; original examples in good condition are becoming rare. The market prefers four-wheel-drive, with sales hugging the $20k to $30k area – that’s up from high four figures about six, seven years ago. This seller indicates he is motivated; if the sale consummates at the current bid, the buyer should be happy.

Altho nota cheb guy lub me da actionline or 2nd gen cheb truck(s) for looks. The 1st gen got me the most work tho, on a neighbor’s acreage. Gota 400 for sale at the shop we made. Took the 400 crank and put it/the rest ina 350 block (minor clearanceing for 1 C-rod).. Was in the ramp truck for a very few mi till the 12v came along.
I remember thinkin these “yellow’ ones a bit strange. Probably put on the green if mine for long. Mixed feelings abt the auto as it’s nota street truck. Never had one in a plow but the sno might stack a bit quicker w/one?

IMO, the wagon wheels are refreshing and period correct. A nice change from seeing these with 20 inch wheels that, to me, never look quite right.

I love it. The wagon wheels look great. They look much better on this than something more modern.

I’ve got an Ochra 72 4×4 out back. It was my daily driver and trailer puller after my 72 Chyenne big block engine started loosing power. It was a one owner when I got it but after a few years the timing chain went out and must have bent a valve or push rod so just setting until I get time to restore it.

I don’t much like having factory air on my older trucks. Just a lot of extra clutter that usually doesn’t work anymore. I do have a 68 Camaro with it that will probably have to be all fixed up as I don’t want to change it much.

I agree, the air didn’t work very well and was pretty heavy.

I have a mostly original stripper ’72 C-10 6 cylinder 3 speed long bed that has had the column shift moved to the floor. Its still ‘Ochre’ too. Nothing like an older truck! Strange that this one has a wooden bed as Joe Patterson said above. Maybe it was a left over bed :) Great trucks.
