Way Overpriced? 1986 Mustang LX Coupe

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

If you’re after a 1980s collectible, or perhaps just fed up with (or scared by) the prices that 1960s cars are bringing these days, maybe this 1986 Mustang LX coupe (in the words of the day, “notchback”) could be your cup of tea. It’s up for sale here on ebay, with an asking price of $29,900. You’ll have it shipped from Windsor Locke, CT should you pony up the cash. Good news: you can also make an offer and perhaps get it for closer to book value than what is asked.

This car might look nice from a distance, and perhaps it does so up close, too. There’s no specific claim made, but you have to assume that the car is in the original Bright Red paint, though if you’ve read car ads for any length of time you know that what isn’t said is not to be assumed. But even if this is original paint and panels—the car’s got mid-60,000 miles and has had five owners. This is hardly a documented, low-mileage, “still got the dealership paperwork” kind of car. In fact, there no mention of paperwork, something which would need to come with a car that’s sold for a premium price. So what that there’s a Marti report that shows it to be one of 216 with these trim/paint codes? Granted, it’s cool aside from any perceived rarity, but it’s a bit much to make that rarity a virtue.

One bit of good news: aside from the 5.0-liter V8, this one’s got a 5-speed manual transmission. Related to the performance, in fact the LX was faster than the GT of the day because it was lighter. The horsepower from this power plant might not be impressive today at 200, but for the time, it was a quarter-mile star. The 1986 models also featured some mechanical improvements such as a more meaty rear end (8.8 inches) for when you wanted to thrash those horses. In addition, electronic fuel injection was featured on the HO 5.0 V8.

It’s not a convertible. Don’t care—never wanted a droptop. It is a stylish coupe, with those super-nice accents aft of the rear windows and the relatively uncluttered styling compared to the GT. There’s just something about the way the body of this car sits on the chassis (look at the half-minute video the seller has on youtube and you’ll get it) that makes it hardcore. But hardcore for half the price. Barn Finders, please correct this if you will, but my market research shows cars like this typically go for half the price, and cars with this price have in the 12,000-mile range. Verdict: Cool car. Definite up-and-coming collectible. But not at this dollar figure.

If you are trying to pass this off as an original, why does it have drag radials on it? Appears to have been repainted. I don’t believe the red cars had clear coat in 86. Interior and engine pictures might tell you more about the “mileage” claim. Still overpriced in my opinion.

It appears to be a nice car but who in their right mind would bid on this without a single interior or engine pic?

Wow people are crazy its not a G Body its a 85 Mustang LX repaint and saying 60K + I would have to say its been ran hard showing drag radials out back .If this LX had under 10k that may be a good ask but why no pic with the hood and doors open ? Im not trying to hate on it but Ray Charles could see what Im saying

I think Brian K has this car nailed. Clean and straightforward notchback four-eye Fox, a desirable model. Likely very nice (but without engine and interior pics, who knows for sure). Overpriced for the mileage.

Maybe fourteen to seventeen if in excellent condition, but it is not excellent. No original paint, no eng or int pics, the pinch weld on driver’s side is a bit mangled. Myself, I would not pay over Twelve for it.

This car has obviously been repainted or touched up this year should have the 5 digit odometer so I want to see how they documented the miles. If you blow up the pictures you can see over spray in some area’s

This same car sold on BAT in December for $18,500. They are trying to do a heck of a flip in just 2 months time

Good catch, it was my car I sold it on Bat. Scroll all the way down on the add to see the original pics of when I bought it.

Thanks for the link Mike! Reading the ad from BaT, it clearly states a repaint, new interior, motor swap, transmission swap, and a list of others upgrades.

Nice car, but FIVE owners? And low miles? Yikes.

1986 5.0 with the one year only bad heads and flat top pistons, so you can not put better heads on that engine without changing the pistons.

The stock 1986 engine Mustang can not catch a stock 1985 or stock 1984 Mustang!

85 is the real sweetie for me.
Buddy at work had a black and white GT 5sp model. May have even been a T-top. It really moved out well, great seats. Awesome cars.

If it sells it sells. Car prices don’t surprise me anymore, especially after the last BJ auction. On a sidenote, that’s a great looking car, 4 eyes are probably the nicest fox bodies built.

Had one just like this for a do during my dealership days and it ran really well. I think the horsepower was underrated. I liked it pretty well as I did the Cougar I had after it, it was also ran really well.

If I went to look at this five point oh without knowing the asking price and the seller said he wanted THIRTY THOUSAND FREAKING DOLLARS I’d have a hard time either not laughing in his face, or punching him for wasting my time. Unbelievable. I’ve been a foxbody fan since I was ten years old, so I know a lot about these cars, and $30k is insulting. $15k and I’d still feel like I paid too much.

    30k? …10 – 12k imo.

I’ve been watching these cars for a year. Trying to get a 86 convertible. You’d be amazed what these owners think there cars are worth. They want vette money for half the horsepower. 3 years ago these cars were in the 5-7k range.
