Beige Isn’t Always Boring: 1970 Chevrolet Nova SS

The seller of this 1970 Nova SS describes it as the most original 1970 Nova that he has ever seen. That’s a pretty bold statement to make. Located in Fredericksburg, Texas, and for sale here on eBay is this Nova with a clear title. This 3 owner vehicle could be yours for $37,500 but there is the option to make an offer.

The seller states that the Gobi Beige paintwork on this car is original. If so then it is in remarkable condition. Honestly, there doesn’t appear to be a spot of rust or corrosion anywhere that is obvious. Even stone chips and scratches seem to be minimal. A close inspection also shows that all chrome and trim is intact and in great condition. The gold vinyl roof also appears to be in excellent condition.

The interior isn’t perfect, but once again the seller claims that this is 100% original upholstery. The seats do show a small amount of stretching and discoloration, but there is nothing there that is of major concern.

Here we see the only 2 deviations from original in the interior, both of which were installed in 1972. They original owner did have air con and an 8-track fitted for their entertainment pleasure and comfort. With The Eagles in the 8-track, they are undoubtedly a person of good taste.

Things look just as good in the trunk. That is the original spare tire. I don’t know about any of you, but I for one would be investing in another wheel and spare tire for normal running. I don’t think that I’d be willing to stake my life on a 48 year old tire!

Under the hood is the wonderful 350ci engine which is backed by the TH400 auto transmission. Power is then sent to the ground via the original 12-bolt Positraction rear end. The seller states that the entire drive-train is the original numbers matching gear. They also list a long line of accessories that were specified on this car including tinted glass and Strato-Bucket front seats. There are quite a few more items listed, and it’s definitely worth taking a look at the advertisement. Another great thing about this survivor is that its history is fully documented including build sheets and original window sticker.

If this car is as original as the seller claims then it is probably a special car. Scouting around at survivor grade Novas shows that the price on this seems to be quite competitive. Whether you think that it’s too cheap or too dear is a matter of opinion. One thing that is almost guaranteed is that someone will want this enough to slap the cash on the table. So I guess the real question is: Does this Nova live up to the seller’s bold claim, or is he blowing hot air?

The sellers ad contradicts itself, at various point both a TH350 and TH400 are claimed to be the transmission installed in the car. It would have a TH350.

I’m surprised there is no mention of which gear ratio the rear end has, both the protecto plate and window sticker would include that information. I’d also expect both the protecto plate and window sticker to have been shown in the ad, the presence of documentation like that only serves to increase the value of the car.

It’s a nice car, I like the color, but it’s aggressively priced, probably too aggressively.

Didn’t SS’s come with the fancy gauge cluster with all the guages insted of the big speedometer? Or is that just Chevelles?

No, if gauges were ordered on this year Nova, a tach would have taken the place of the clock or the fuel gauge, I can’t remember which, and the other gauges would have been mounted on the console like the 68-69 Camaro.

From what I remember, the only way to get a tach in the 68-72 Nova’s was to order the gauge package. A tiny, almost useless tach replaced the fuel gauge, and the fuel gauge was moved to the floor console. Of course, because the auxiliary gauges were installed in the console, to get the gauge package, you also needed to order bucket seats and the console.

I had a lot of friends that drove 68-72 Nova’s, and I only remember one guy that had a factory tach and gauges. Most Nova’s, even the SS’s, were pretty basic, with most buyers passing on expensive options like buckets, console and gauges. It was a lot cheaper to just buy a Sun tach, and it was a lot easier to see too.

That’s a pretty nice example of a Nova, but I think the price is a little strong.

This isn’t a fully optioned car. It has the standard 350 engine. Now it it had the gauge PKG & 350/350 engine or 396/402 it’d be worth the asking price. Nice enough cat though! Oh did I say 4 speed?

A 350/350 engine was not available in the Nova SS.

No, it wasn’t!! The 350/300 was the only small block motor available in the 1970 Nova SS!

I had a few Nova’s I’d pass on this one between the Mickey Mouse air and the weird rocker molding even overlooking these items the ad had a lot of pictures but not underside photos or any of the documents and other then the SS markings all and all a pretty boring Nova for that kind of money

Those custom car dealers jack the price up so they can make their profit. An individual might not have it priced this high.

I had” Three Dog Night ” in my eight track back in the day. You’d put the “Eagle’s” eight track in the deck when your hot girlfriend wanted to ride right next to you on the bench seat.

TH 350 in this one. In 1970 the TH400 only came with the big block in this body style. Mickey Mouse radio and Mickey Mouse air……….way too much money!

Seems to me the 307 was the base engine in these cars. With 6 cylinders being a cheaper choice and larger V8’s as optional.

307 wasn’t available with even a basic SS car!! Even the Impala which I had a 70 could only be had with a big block 454!!

I ordered and bought a 1970 Nova Supersport new in 1970. It was a 350 horsepower 396/402 turbo 400 column shift bench seat. Late March production and the base Supersport package was upgraded to include an in dash tachometer and a rear sway bar. 3:31 gears were the only ratio offered. First week a had it i replaced the 396 emblems with 307 and added headers. Dog dish hubcaps and Forest Green paint helped the sleeper look. $3125 out the door at Parker Robb Chevrolet in Walnut Creek , CA great car.

I think the bumpers were the same from 68-72 Novas. This one has the optional accessory “bumper guards” that fo in olace of the standard bumper holts.

Up in the hill country around Fredricksberg there are many very cool old cars. That area has been big money for ever. This one is nice but I’ll bet there are many more hiden away around there.
