Winter Project: 1955 Plymouth Plaza Wagon

'55 Plymonth Plaza wagon

We have featured many cars here on Barn Finds, but this is the first Plaza we’ve ever featured! It is reported that the 1955 Plaza was the first four-door Plymouth station wagon. We know many of you like two-door wagons and some of you could purchase this four-door and do some subtraction. Listed here on eBay, parked in Salem, Iowa is this 1955 Plymouth Plaza Station Wagon with a BIN of $3,825 and the option to make the owner an offer.

Add this one to the “ran when parked” fleet. The owner says this Plaza was a running and driving car when parked but has been sitting for years. It was sold new in California, moved to Arizona until the late 1990’s, then on to Missouri and now Iowa. The engine is complete, does not run but does turn over.

The owner describes this Plaza as a “Fresh Barn find” that is bone stock with a mint frame, good rockers, solid spare tire well, but there are some small holes in the floors. We see some areas we would want to investigate further for rust, but overall it look solid.

The car has newer tires on stock rims. The buyer will also get the owner’s and shop manuals.

The car rolls and steers but there are no brakes. The seller will help load this Plaza onto a trailer but reminds you that there are no brakes. The price has been lowered so the seller maybe interested in your offer.  Please review the other images with the ad, there are even images of the undercarriage for you to ponder! So would you leave this Plymouth as is, restore, or modify it?

Motor-on,
Robert

I would add a GM 6.0 with automatic or other such cheap modern engine, clean and seal the floors, add a dual master cylinder and drive the wheels off it.

pretty solid car…I agree with Dan: do a running gear swap, front clip, and love the patina!

Would like to see it with a V8. Or even a hemi which they did not have at the time.

A hemi was available in 1955 Plymouths.

Vince, my bad. I was thinking that Plymouth had a Hemi in 55 when in fact it was the Dodge. Sorry.

This is way too rare a car to sacrifice it to the torch gods. Please leave it alone! We never get to see stuff this nice.

If you guys want swap out the engine send it up to Canada I’ll help you out with the burden of getting rid of that old flat head. This is a pretty plain car but Jason’s right on this one it would be wrong to custom this car. If you read the history on this engine you’d know that it was one of the most durable engines ever built in fact back in the day these dodges were the car of choice for taxi companies as it wasn’t unusual to get half a million miles out of one.
