Work-In-Progress: 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396

The mid-size muscle car revolution was in full swing in 1966, which included the Chevy Chevelle SS 396. It was the fourth such car fielded by General Motors (along with the Pontiac GTO, Olds 442, and Buick Gran Sport). Chevrolet delivered 67,000 SS 396 Sport Coupes (plus some convertibles) in 1966, including this unfinished project. Finished in primer, the car is incomplete but has a period-correct big-block motor. Located in a dry climate in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, this solid DIY is available here on eBay for $17,500.

We’re told this is a real-deal SS 396 according to the VIN. From 1966 to 1968, the SS was a series of its own, so verifying these cars is much easier than after 1969. Three versions of the 396 were offered in ’66, ranging in horsepower output from 325 to 375. We don’t know what was in this car originally, nor do we know what the replacement engine puts out. With one of the chrome valve covers missing, we assume this car has not run in a while.

The Chevy originated in California and has only lived there, in Arizona, and now in New Mexico. The seller bought the car to restore and kept it in dry storage, but the seller’s interest has been lost. The body appears to be good, though lots of pieces seem to be missing, including the vent window in the driver’s door. Rust shouldn’t be an issue when you turn it over to your body shop.

A prior owner did a front disc brake conversion, which is a plus, and a TH-400 automatic transmission is along for the ride. We’re told the upholstery is new, and the headliner and door cards are in boxes waiting to be installed. The aftermarket steering wheel looks totally out of place. If I bought the car, it would have to go. There is no driveshaft, but all four wheels roll.

Now who doesn’t love an angel wing steering wheel?

Yes, the steering wheel is horrible, but is easily replaced. What it’s attached to is a much bigger deal.

I have to admit I prefer this earlier body style to later examples, but also get the shivers thinking about the prospect of chasing down all the missing bits and getting it up and running again. Still, wish I could take it on.

And yes, an original steering wheel would be right up at the top of the list.

The eBay listing is now marked sold, which is not surprising.
