Could this Honda be the world’s smallest Woodie? That’s the question that came to mind when I saw this custom creation here on Hemmings. This little guy has been restored, but I couldn’t resist giving it a mention. The N600 was the first Honda-built car to hit our shores. It was tiny and the engine was even tinier. As the name suggests, the two-cylinder engine only displaced 600 cubic centimeters. And to think that this was the big engined model! Personally, I would have gone with the Mini even if it wasn’t quite as efficient. Obviously, not everyone thought like me though because Honda went on to become a household name here in America. Just think, now you can have your Japanese efficiency with some American styling!
Looks to be in fine condition, and I’d love to have another! It has only been 42 years since the last one….
That said, I could do without both sunroof and wood trim. Not crazy about the color, either, which I believe is not one of the original choices.
I agree with Jesse’s preference for Minis, but when you consider the original list price of the N600 — $1295.00 — it’s easy to see why the Honda appealed to a low-budget college kid.
I could be wrong, but I think the Mini was actually cheaper than the Honda when new. The Mini has appreciated more now though.
Jesse, seems to me new Minis weren’t even available in the U.S. when I bought my N600 in 1970. I think they were gone by ’68 or so, but of course I could be wrong, as that was a long, long time ago.
I really wanted a NEW car at the time! My experience with used rides led me to prize shiny and fresh; a $50 Hillman Minx will do that to you….

My friend sold Hondas at a Chevrolet dealer in 1972. I don’t remember any N600’s on the lot. A new Z600 was $1967 asking price, out the door, tax included. I bought a 1972 Mercury Capri V6 instead. A year later someone offered me what a paid for the Capri, I sold it a bought a used Z600. Cheap parts. Battery from the dealer was $29. My buddy had one, 2 or 3 years old with rust. His brother had to have mine, so I sold it.
