Wrecked 383 V8: 1970 Dodge Charger

Disclosure: This site may receive compensation from some link clicks and purchases.

Based on Chrysler’s B-Body intermediates, the early Dodge Chargers were modestly successful. It was not until the second generation came along from 1968-70 that the cars began speeding out of dealerships. This 1970 edition was involved in a front-end collision more than 40 years ago and has been in hibernation ever since. But it’s a numbers-matching car that’s looking for someone with patience (and a bank balance) to bring it back to life. Located in Everest, Kansas, this Dodge project is available here on eBay where the bidding stands at $9,900. But it will have to go higher to trigger the reserve.

The 1970 model year would be the third in the cycle before the B-bodies switched to “fuselage” styling in 1971. Dodge produced nearly 50,000 Chargers that year, almost the same number as 1966-67 combined. Of those, some 19,000 units came with the bigger V8s engines (in other words, not a Slant Six or 318).  The seller’s car has its original 383 cubic inch eight-cylinder, but it’s partially disassembled and thought to be stuck.

This ’70 Charger got itself into an accident in 1979 and hasn’t been touched, except for the removal of the front clip and pulling parts off the motor. All that sheet metal and the car’s front rails and aprons are bent. And the trunk floor has some rust, but we’re told the rest of the “bones” are good. The dark green paint was offset at one time by a vinyl top which has long ago been peeled away with patina remaining. Inside the car, the door panels at a minimum will need some work, yet the front seat appears to have been recently reupholstered.

The seller is rather proud of the fact he/she has a broadcast sheet and will give it to the buyer, but it’s not for this car so what value does that add? But the numbers on the title, VIN plate, engine block, body, and fender tags all seem to agree. This was a factory A/C Dodge, but we don’t know if any of that hardware still works. Don’t get your heart set on the wheels and tires shown in the photos as they don’t come with the car – rollers will be provided instead. And the seller has a few extra parts which he/she “may sell to the winner.” Why not just throw them in considering that it’s going to take a lot to turn this into a $30,000 car.

Let’s see, a base Charger that took a hard hit to the front (hood had to be cut out to get open for parts removal), lo-spec (cheap) seat recovering, non-running “***383 VIN MATCHING BLOCK*** PRETTY SURE ENGINE FROZE UP”, top of roof at the left corner of the rear window is rusted through, holding broadcast sheet hostage unless you opt for buy it now….a total turn off ad! Finding a replacement front clip is going to be pricey, along with the required frame work. $17.5K BIN? GLWTA!!

You know, Dixie was written by a Northerner. Just saying. Maybe the horns should play Sweet Home Alabama. No wait, the Dukes are from Georgia. How about Georgia on my mind.

Can you Imagine if you would have towed this wreck in to Chevy dealer in 1990 and confidently demanded an even trade for a new C4 Corvette? You would have been offered $100 and laughed out of there. Now, this is worth more than a ’90 C4 with 5,000 miles on it.

People might pay more for this, but that’s because they’re eejits. The running, driving Corvette is worth more because it’s a functioning box-on-wheels.

This wreckage is an automatic, too. What’s to like?

Seems like the only decent part of this ride is the interior, but not for $$ that is being asked of

Another clapped out shellfish a mopar, another crack smoking seller hoping to get like 7 times the cars original MSRP. Someone with a very optimistic outlook will probably pay up though. I wish them the best of luck.

Looks more solid than most of the second gen chargers I see on Barn Finds.

Yep – all the Mopar guys wished the General Lee was a GTO – Chevelle or Mustang but then the arm chair restorers would find some hate there as well.
