There is an old saying that if you want a specialized car cheaper than you can find, or one that you can’t find at all, you’ll need to build it yourself. But that’s probably not the case here with this 1929 Ford Model A pickup truck as they are still surprisingly common and I have reviewed many here on Barn Finds. Nevertheless, the seller states, “It is a project built up from wrecking yard parts“. Gotta’ appreciate a hands-on approach. This Model A is located in Modesto, California and is available, here on eBay for a current bid of $5,100 with twenty-five bids tendered so far.
Of the 4.8 M Model A’s produced, Ahooga, claims that 482K were non-commercial trucks, with 156K assembled in ’29 – one of the reasons, along with their durable simplicity, that 92 years later, there is still a goodly number in existence. Admittedly, in its current state, this Ford pickup bears a bit of a similarity to the Beverly Hillbillies Oldsmobile flatbed, it definitely has a thrown-together bearing about itself. While the body could use some attention, the seller adds, “Frame and running gear were restored and powder coated“. Among the missing is the cargo bed floor so there’s another item that will eventually need attention.
Also mentioned are the top bows but the seller states that he’ll have to look through this pile to find them – hopefully, all of them are in there somewhere
It’s alive! This model A runs and you can check it out courtesy of YouTube. Its 40 HP, 201 CI in-line, four-cylinder engine sounds a bit chippy but that may be due to the circumstances of the video and the lack of floorboards which allows all that chatter to enter the cab.
A brief note about the interior, there really isn’t any, at least not any that I could spy. This walk-around video reveals a steering wheel/column and a black vinyl bench seat bottom, and the driving video gives a glimpse of an instrument panel but beyond that, an inquiry will have to be made.
The seller advises those interested that, “Circumstances make it too difficult for me to finish the project so I must sell it“. That’s an unfortunate turn of events but hopefully, someone with similar mechanical skill will acquire this “A” and see it to a conclusion. A rat-rod is mentioned as one finishing possibility but I hope that does not become this 1929 Model A truck’s fate, how about you?
If you have a good frame and driveline already in place all you have to do is paint the body, put the wood floors back in, find some seats and you are on the road. Ask any car builder how much it will cost to do anything else with this but what I just mentioned and you will understand the huge project this could become. Nice old truck just like it is.

Fix what needs to be done and enjoy it. It should take much black paint and primer. Really not a whole lot to do for it. Don,t put ETHANOL in it. It will ruin some parts. Put REAL 100% GAS IN IT.
My Dad had a 29 Ford Roadster pickup in the 40’s. In the winter of 49 it snowed to a level reaching the second floor of our two story house. The pickup was parked next to the driveway on the front yard and was completely covered with snow. A snow plow came down the street, but was far above the roadway passing over the pickup. When Spring came and the snow melted the pickup was found to be undamaged. That story was told many times over the decades by family members. I was but two years old at the time but I still remember we had to tunnel out from the front door so older siblings could go to school. That was in Stevenson, Washington.
