At first glance, you might think you are looking at a 1930s car. As it turns out, the car is old as it was produced over 50 years ago, but not as old as you’d think. This 1966 Glassic Phantom is listed for sale here on craigslist and is located in Naples, Florida. Thank you Barn Finds reader Fred H. for sending in this unusual find! The asking price for the Phantom is a not-so-spectral $5,000, but since it’s listed on Craiglist, I’m hoping that’s somewhat negotiable. Glassic marketed these cars as being “For the young at heart”; I like that idea!
There’s a very informative website about these cars located at glassicannex.org, with their “Reunion” scheduled, ironically for today (March 5, 2018). Glassic Industries produced roughly 1600 1931 Model A replicas between 1966 and 1981, with the early cars like this one being on International Scout frames with the Scout drive train and later cars having a bespoke frame and Ford 302 V8s.
The fiberglass on this one seems pretty intact, although quite weathered. The remnants of the top should be a good enough pattern for an upholstery shop to make a new one. Room for at least four folks and a luggage rack for more — it’s even practical!
The seats let down the appearance in my opinion. I like the two-tone effect of the ones in this original brochure better.
As stated earlier, this car is from the first year of Glassic production and as you can see from the owners listing here, a previously undiscovered find. It looks like the current owners of Glassics really enjoy their cars for what they are; a remembrance of days gone by with relatively modern mechanical components for reliability. Care to join them? Sounds like fun to me!
I like it! Don’t paint it except maybe a little rattle can touch-up on the fenders, leave the seats, forget about the top, leave the windshield down ALL the time, and drive the snot out of it. I thing like that could be a ton of fun if you didn’t take it too seriously.
Ford produced model A replicas in the late 70’s and those ran pinto running gears. The only outward difference was 2 tail lights and turn signals. Neat cars.

No. This one is 2-wheel drive. Don’t know if there were any actually produced in 4-wheel drive, but since it was on a Scout chassis it was possible. Notice no front hubs or transfer case lever on this one.

Vaka will make anything you want with a Mercury Grand marquis chassis or an F-150 chassis underneath.
Look them up on the net to see what they can do.

Wasn’t this the one on the Florida Co-Part site….it was in a fire of some sort…think the top bid was under $2000….was watching it for a while.
What sucks is this car was on craigslist for a day for $1,000. It was sitting in a field for years in Fort Myers Florida, reason it looks like that now. This guy got to it before me and listed it back on craigslist the next day.

I have two of these, although both slightly newer than this one. Fixed up right, they’re very reliable and absolute blast to drive. Wish I had the funds to buy this one and restore it too. I hope whoever gets this keeps it reasonably stock, only 330 made with IH. Wouldn’t sell mine for anything.
