In the late 1960s/early 1970s, Dodge applied the R/T (Road/Track) moniker to several muscle cars, including the family-oriented Coronet. As was the case with the Charger R/T, the Coronet R/T was equipped with a 440 cubic inch V8 as standard fare. That’s the case with the seller’s rare ’68 ragtop, which is 1 of 88 produced with that engine and a 4-speed manual transmission (per the seller). Located in Orange Park, Florida, this nearly finished project is available here on eBay for a cool $73,000.

Sources indicate that the overall pool of 1968 Coronet R/T convertibles was 569, so the other 481 must have had an automatic transmission and/or a different motor (such as a 426 Hemi). Apparently, this Mopar is not numbers-matching as the 440 4-barrel is described as “date-coded’ with a Dana 60 rear end, which has been rebuilt. A bunch of new parts have been installed, including the brakes, front end, fuel tank, and exhaust system. As such, we’re told it runs and drives as it should.

Corrosion may not have been a problem as the undercarriage is clean, but we’re told a little body work is needed, as you prepared the car for new blue paint. The entire top is new, and a bunch of the chrome bits have been redone. The black interior has been renewed, and a new mat can be found in the trunk. A brand-new set of Magnum 500 wheels has been secured along with the tires they need to roll on.

Besides the body/paint, the only other thing you may need to do is hook up the radio (it doesn’t work at the moment). All things considered, you’re not too far away from the finish line with this rare Dodge, but you could end up having six figures tied up in this vehicle once all is said and done. But it might take months for you to find another one in any kind of condition.

Wow Coronet Convertible w the 3 pedals 🤲. I believe the 4sp. 440 combo came w the heavy Dana 60 out back std equipment. I could be wrong.
This isn’t one you see everyday. 🏁
Chrysler engineering wasn’t afraid of putting an 8 3/4″ differential behind a 440 Magnum/Super Commando with a Torqueflite, but they insisted on the Dana 60 if the car had a four speed. Typically, that was forced onto the car by making the selection of either the Track Pack or Super Track Pack option mandatory with a 440 HP with a four speed or a hemi, four speed or automatic.
If it has the Track Pack option yes, otherwise it has the 8 3/4
Looks like the hard work is done for the most part. Just finishing details and paint. Someone will stash that baby away
73k then another 12-25k on body and paint. big price to pay then have to pay to finish. it may be rare that’s way too much and have to still do finish work.
Agree 100% w hairyolds68…..plus does not sound like it is #’s matching so $70k is pretty steep IMHO regardless of its rarity! Someone will have close to or just over $100k into it by the time it is finished……lots of other options for that kind of $$.
Who knows if the cars of our youth are gonna retain their values…its a crap shoot. Who woulda thought flat side pickups would be worth so much..cars from the 30s n fourths not so cool anymore..I can only hope I live long enough to own one of these beautiful muscle cars. All I know is I can’t afford one…n it pisses me off
Absolutely agree with you!
I thought R/T stood for Rapid Transit. That’s what the salesman told me when I bought mine from Grand Spaulding Dodge in 1970.
Now that’s funny, because Plymouth marketing used Rapid Transit and Dodge used Scat Pack to promote their muscle cars.
This is my favorite magazine ad from back then.
Would like to see that fender tag for that much money….and 1 of 88 must be the trac pak….Dana
You would think they would finish it , for the price.
