To me, the SN95 Mustang remains one of the better performance bargains available on the market today. I’ve felt for a while they suffer from the same fate as other iconic cars that came right after a well-loved generation, in this case, the iconic Fox body. To follow that act, the next performance needed to be absolutely phenomenal, and while the SN95 wasn’t a bad car – at all – it just didn’t have the same charm as its predecessor. In effect, values have stayed fairly flat, but for how much longer? This super low mileage 2002 Ford Mustang GT convertible listed here on eBay is effectively a new car, with under 12,000 original miles and a Buy-It-Now of $12,299 – with the option to submit a best offer.
This generation of the SN95 was known as the “New Edge” era, where the rounded design of the earlier models gave way to a more chiseled look, almost as if it was reverting back to the upright styling of the Fox chassis. Regardless, it led to several special editions that are quite desirable today, from the Mach 1 to the Bullitt edition to the low production Cobra R. The interiors were still pretty chintzy but in low mileage cars like this one, it looks perfectly fine. The automatic may not be your first choice, but for a convertible with a V8, it’s not exactly a penalty, either. The leather buckets appear to be in fine fettle, and the Mach 1000 stereo should shatter your eardrums fairly efficiently.
The details under the hood lend further validation to the low mileage reading on the odometer, as its showroom fresh across the board. Hoses and plastics alike appear to be in as-new condition, and the paint on the shock towers doesn’t bear the scars of years’ worth of underhood dirt and grime piling up. The 4.6L produces a healthy 260 b.h.p. and if I’m reading the options list correctly, this Mustang is equipped with a limited-slip differential to help put that power to the ground effectively. Speaking of staying on the road, the seller does disclose that the GT has some accident damage and bodywork in its history file, as the passenger side front fender was replaced and the hood was painted.
The torque-thrust style wheels are a great look for this generation of the SN95, a style perfected by the desirable Bullitt edition cars. This one seems like a bargain in wait, especially if the seller accepts a lower offer than advertised here. The color combo, options, and low mileage make for a weekend or hobby car that’s easy to love, and for well under $15,000, you’re also getting impressive performance right out of the box. Add an exhaust, headers, and an intake if you want to improve the performance without going overboard, or go crazy and add a supercharger. Or, better yet, do nothing at all besides owning a near-new SN95 Mustang GT for less than the cost of a new Civic.
I think Jeff has done a good job of placing this generation Mustang in its proper context. Good performance, sporty looks, straightforward mechanicals, yet quite inexpensive. I think the clean and original cars will start rising in price.
This is a good example, a low mileage convertible for not a lot of money. Have some simple fun by cruising with your local Mustang club or taking the kids or grandkids for a top-down ride. “Grandpa, can we go for a ride in the convertible?”
I liked em new and I like em now. The 98 face lift did these a ton of justice and they still sound like a Mustang.
Darn fine car, fine indeed. If I were a younger man I would be tempted to make a play for this one. At my age, the auto is not a problem, in fact, for these creaky joints it is a plus. Great vacation car. Good sized trunk, and top down when ya want it, otherwise top up climate controlled bliss. what a way to see the country! This is a more than fair price, it won’t last long.
The 1999 model year brought not only better looks but new cylinder heads and intake manifold that gave the 4.6 a significant power boost up to probably what it should have been to begin with.
Gone already.
I had a 99 coupe , had some after market mach 1 accents and the torque thrust wheels. White and black. I adored that car. Sadly both heads cracked and a new engine was cost prohibitive for me . she was also my daily. Had to sale Sally. That was 2 years ago. Still regret it.
Nice car, sold quick. These are great for a young collector looking to get into the muscle car hobby as well as the “prices are way out of reach now” curmudgeon crowd. Simple and cheap future collectable with a strong aftermarket following. Watch out for strut tower rust
